Netiquette, Simply,
Rules
Step
1- Politeness Wins Customers
It might seem
with all the hoopla on the Internet about marketing opportunities, it's
just one great big happy mall waiting for enterprising folks like to you
sell.
Nothing could
be further from the truth! The Internet was started years ago as a means
for scientists to share information. Over time, it grew into the massive
culture it is now.
A culture that
has rules, just like a dinner party does!
It's the smart
entrepreneur who takes advantage of this and follows the rules. Forget
about this bleeping "Free Spech! It's My Right As A Human Bean!"
stuff. By following netiquette, you'll stand out as someone who respects
the groups' manners. And of course, that "group" contains potential
customers! You simply can't go wrong.
Step
2 - Some Netiquette No-No's Include
Netiquette no-no's
include:
- Never spam
(send out broad, unsolicited, untargeted email). Forget bulk mailers, forget
buying a mailing list (you never know from where email names are taken).
When you send email to someone who has no interest and doesn't want any,
they can report you to your ISP and have your account canceled.
- Never post
inappropriately to newsgroups. Newsgroups
were meant to share information about the topic in question. Rec.pets.birds,
for example, is meant to discuss parrots, not how to make $5,639,289 by
sending out out email to the five people below! And misc.fitness.aerobics
is for exercising enthusiasts, not for posting about bizopps!
Thats doesn't
mean you can't advertise effectively on Netnews! There are lots of places
to learn about how to do so, like following
Step
3 - Great Netiquette Resources
There are lots
of places where you can learn about netiquette and improve your business.
They include:
- Advertising
on Usenet: How To Do It, How Not To Do It. Advertising on Usenet
(nowadays called "News") is a frequently misunderstood subject.
The purpose of this FAQ is to explain some Usenet conventions regarding
advertising to new users and, hopefully, spare everyone involved a lot
of needless worry.
- Core
Rules Of Netiquette. Learn Netiquette basics by reading this concise
overview of network etiquette excerpted from the book Netiquette by Virginia
Shea. Shea's "Core Rules"are the classic introduction to the
subject and are widely cited in cyberspace.

Netizens
: On the History and Impact of Usenet and the Internet by Michael Huben,
Ronda Hauden, Ronda Hauben (Contributor), Michael Hauben - A netizen,
as Ronda and Michael Hauben use the term, is more than just somebody who
uses the Internet. It is somebody who has demonstrated a devotion to being
a good citizen of an online community. Some have been involved in constructing
parts of the Net and forming it into a major social force. Others are simply
members of mailing lists and discussion groups, quietly lending a helping
hand to others and sharing information, support, and aid through the wires.
The Haubens tell the history of the Internet through netizens.
Rules
of the Net : On-Line Operating Instructions for Human Beings by Gerard
Van Der Leun (Contributor), Thomas Mandel - If you're baffled by the
customs, protocol, and unwritten laws that seem to drive life on the Net,
you need "Rules of the Net." This wise collection of rules, commandments
and wisdom helps net newbies to survive and thrive in cyberspace, and it
sure wouldn't kill many net oldtimers to pick up on some of the advice
. As the book so elegantly points out: On the Net, you are what you do.
