Mining The Net
Have you run across any good stories on the Internet? We are always looking for interesting stuff on the net to share with our fellow contract employees. E-mail us your links, and we'll publish them here.
On-line Forums for Contractors
Here are some web sites where contractors can share their experiences, ask questions and offer advice on the subject of contracting.
The Computer Consultant's Message Board
www.realrates.com/bbs/
The Computer Consultant's Message Board is located on Janet Ruhl's Computer Consultant's Resource Page. It is by far the Web's most active on-line forum devoted exclusively to contracting issues. Although the Message Board is aimed primarily at computer professionals, the issues discussed are common to all contractors. Whether you are a savvy guru or a newbie wannabe, The Computer Consultant's Message Board is "must reading".
Contract Employment Daily
www.cedaily.com/
The Contract Employment Daily forum is divided into several categories, including Shop Talk, IRS & Legal, Weekly Featured Topic, Industry Buzz, and Horror Stories. I especially like the feature that let's me preview my post and edit the text before final posting.
Contract Employment Weekly
www.ceweekly.com/
Contract Employment Weekly is both a print and on-line magazine for contractors. There is a subscription fee. Subscribers have access to a Message Board where they can ask questions, share experiences and exchange information.
CPUniverse Forum
www.cpuniverse.com/Forum/default.htm
CPUniverse is the web presence of Contract Professional Magazine. For some reason this forum has never caught on, probably because of competition from the forums listed above.
Roadwhore
www.Roadwhore.com/
This site is named after the moniker given to highly mobile contractors, or roadies, who travel all over the United States and indeed the world in pursuit of high-paying engineering assignments. Roadwhore offers several industry-specific BBS's, including Nuclear; Petro-chemical, Fossil & Off-shore; Computers, Software, Networking & Telephoney; Aerospace & Aircraft; and Overseas. I wish the sysop was more diligent in keeping job posters under control so there could be more discussion on roadie issues.
On-line Forums for Recruiters
Here are some forums frequented by recruiters. Lurking in these sites is like being a fly on the wall. You get an interesting peek at the mentality and level of professionalism exhibited by recruiters when they are talking among themselves.
www.technicalrecruiter.com
This web site supports a reasonably active on-line forum for technical recruiters. The discussions are mostly drivel, and the server is agonizingly slow. Click the link on the home page for the currently active forum. Old forums are archived and a new forum is started at regular intervals.
Recruiter's Network Forum
www.recruitersnetwork.com/exchange.htm
Access to this forum is free, but requires that you register. Probably for this reason it is not very active.
RECNET Listserv
www.recruitersnetwork.com/listserv.htm
RECNET is a free list forum for the sharing of ideas and information about On-line recruiting. The premise is a simple one; messages sent to the e-mail address recnet@recruitersnetwork.com are shared with the entire subscribed audience. It might be fun to participate is discussions, for example, on how to locate a specific type of job opening in a specific locality.
