An explosion took place on Wednesday, at Arley Mine, Wigan, belonging to the Ince Hall Company. Seventy-five men were in the pit at the time, of which twenty were killed, thirty burned, and twenty-five were still in the mine at noon on Thursday.

It is feared that some will die out of the thirty injured. How many of the twenty-five in the pit are alive is unknown. All are supposed to be dead.

The explosion took place at the bottom of the upcast shaft. A furnace there had been relighted, after repairs, and gas having accumulated, it ignited, and caused the explosion.
