Psoriasis History:
The name Psoriasis comes from the greek word for "itch". Although
Psoriasis
has been around since ancient times, its cause still remains unknown.
Psoriasis
is not a contagious disease but a genetic problem transmitted from generation
to generation. Some scientists believe that Psoriasis occurs due to
abnormal
function of the white cells in the blood stream. New research also shows
the
possibility that Psoriasis could be associated with liver problems,
or the
digestive system.
Psoriasis
Statistics: According to the National Psoriasis Foundation,
there
are more than 5 million people suffering from Psoriasis in the United
States
alone. The number of Psoriasis cases in the U.S. is increasing in a
rate of more
than 100.000 new cases a year. Worldwide, it is estimated that more
than 100
million people are affected by Psoriasis.
Psoriasis
Symptoms and Characteristics:
Psoriasis generally appears on the scalp, on the backside of the elbows,
knees,
wrists and ankles. Psoriasis patients suffer with skin inflammation,
redness,
itching and scaling. Plaques of overlapping scales may build up. The
topical
problem is that the skin cells are dividing at a extremely high rate.
In normal
skin the epidermis remakes itself about every 30 days. But in case of
Psoriasis, the skin speeds up its own replacement and is reproduced
every
three days. The scales accumulate, forming the plaque.
In addition to the physical problems caused by Psoriasis, the psychological
effects are often devastating. Because of its appearance, people with
Psoriasis
have to constantly wear clothes that hide the affected areas. Activities
like
going to the beach, or swimming pools are often avoided. A lot of people
don't
know that Psoriasis is not contagious and because of that Psoriasis
sufferers
may be shunned by others. The fear of intimacy, or sexual contact can
also turn
into an embarrassing situation, with possible psychological consequences.
What
could trigger Psoriasis symptoms?
Since there is no known cure for Psoriasis, all existing medications
can only
control the symptoms. Different factors can trigger the return of Psoriasis
symptoms. The most common factors are infections, liver disfunctions
and
even stress or poor diet. Psoriasis often flares-up during the winter
season,
due to cold temperature and lack of sunlight. How can you tell if you
have
Psoriasis? Besides the symptoms described above and your family history,
your dermatologist can perform a biopsy or an exam of nails, skin and
scalp.
Psoriasis
Treatments:
There are several often recommended methods of Psoriasis treatment:
Coal Tar - Coal Tar has been used for more then a century to treat Psoriasis.
It
is still considered a messy form of treatment, that could have a embarrassing
odor and leave stains on the skin or clothes.
Corticosteroids- Cortisone creams and ointments are among the most
common treatments for Psoriasis. In some cases, after a long term use,
it
can cause thinning of the skin and other side effects.
PUVA light treatment - Ultraviolet light is sometimes recommended in
severe
cases of Psoriasis to slow the rapid grow of skin cells. This treatment
however, has the risk of causing skin cancer, wrinkles, eyes damage
and
requires approximately 30 sessions before the skin starts to recuperate.
Anthralin - Can stain the hair, skin, clothes and cause irritation.
Retin-A
(Vitamin-A) can be used in combination with other forms of treatment,
but
could also produce some side effects on the skin, eyes, bones and fat
levels in
the blood.
Anti-Cancer drugs - Some oral anti-cancer drugs can be used when other
treatments fail, but requires constant monitoring because it could damage
the
liver and produce other side effects.
ZINC PYRITHIONE- Zinc Pyrithione is a natural activation of Zinc,
discovered by British and Spanish scientists years ago. It is considered
as one
of the most successful treatment of Psoriasis and other severe skin
disorders
in Europe.
The treatment was introduced in the United States about 5 years ago
and now is
available under the name of DERMAZINC
and the PRESCRIPTION
STRENGTH DERMAZINC-PLUS. It is a
complete line of products
including Spray (with Scalp applicator), Cream, Shampoo and bars of
soap, that
can be combined to produce a very powerful treatment of Psoriasis symptoms.
DERMAZINC-PLUS contains ZINC
PYRITHIONE compounded with
0.05% of CLOBETASOL PROPIONATE, substance approved by the FDA
for Psoriasis Treatment. Dermazinc-Plus has a success rate of over 95%.
After
the initial treatment that takes about 2-3 weeks, the patient may switch
to
Dermazinc original formula to maintain the results without steroids.
Although Sanavita doesn't deal directly
with Insurance companies, several of
our customers are able to get reimbursement for the expenses with Dermazinc-
Plus. Please ask your sales representative for more information about
it.
Dermazinc is easy to apply, colorless and odorless. The
Spray is the most
essential item, because it penetrates deeper into the skin and the results
come
faster. The Cream can also be used in combination
with the Spray on areas like
elbows and knees, to help moisturize those areas and avoid cracking
of the skin
caused by bending movements. The shampoo
also contains Zinc Pyrithione and
must be used with the Spray (by attaching the adapter for scalp treatment),
to
speed up the treatment. The Dermazinc Soap was
developed for a speedy
recovery.
Psoriasis Tips: Besides the above mentioned treatments
for Psoriasis, there
are a few tips that can be used to improve the results: frequently bathing
helps
to remove dead skin cells and control itching. Sunlight is also recommended
with appropriate caution. Psoriasis symptoms tend to get worse during
the
winter, when the skin is dry, so it is also good to avoid harsh soaps
or
shampoos and hot water when bathing. Also the healthy diet plays an
important
role for Psoriasis treatment. Scratching the areas, affected by Psoriasis,
triggers the inflammation and itching. .
