The Importance of Fraternity Education

By Grace Gori

What is Fraternity Education, and why is it important? In the words of Leslie Taylor, our National Vice President for Ritual and Fraternity Education, "It is knowing the WHO, WHAT,WHERE, AND WHY of our Fraternity. It is a broad term that includes learning and/or reviewing everything about SAI's founding, structure, growth, projects, and outreach to the world ...It is COMMUNICATION among members of your chapter and your campus and/or community. It is the MEANS by which you learn or re-learn your FRATERNITY HISTORY and develop your connection to your FRATERNITY ROOTS." In other words, it is one of the ways we keep in touch with what it means to be an SAI, with those ideals to which each of us pledged herself way back when. Remember our Purpose? You can see it again at http://www.sai- national.org/nh/purpose.html. It is also a means by which to keep informed about the projects we run as a National organization in service of those ideals. Check out the Philanthropies section of our National website: http://www.sai- national.org/phil/phil.html.

At our May 1998 meeting, we remembered how although our founders talked of forming simply a musical club, ultimately they decided upon founding a Sorority because it better fit their plans for close bonds of friendship among the best and the brightest female music students of their time. We are their descendants. Although we may not face the same challenges faced by those seven brave and talented young women (It wasn't until almost two decades later that American women were given the right to vote!), in these days of shrinking arts budgets and the lack of recognition of the importance of music in the average person's life and development, it still makes sense to stand together and help one other, both individually and collectively, to keep Music an active part of the human experience.

See you at our next meeting....
