The Media and the Anglo-Irish Conflict

This week (5th of February) we are posting a comprehensive bibliography of books related to media coverage of the conflict over the past thirty years. The list will be of interest to students, journalists and activists. Some of the books listed are no longer in print.

 The Damien Walsh Memorial Lecture:

  1. Robin Livingstone of the Andersonstown News.
  2. Roy Greenslade media commentator.

During the recent West Belfast Festival two journalists contributed to the very first Damien Walsh Memorial Lecture (for background info click here). Damien was shot dead in March 1993 and the Damien Walsh Group came together on the fifth aniversary of his death to work towards, "Remembering victims, working with survivors."

To launch the group the following lecture was organised on the theme of the media and the Anglo-Irish Conflict. The first contribution, from an Irish perspective, is from Robin Livingstone of the Andersonstown News. The second, from a British perspective, comes from Roy Greenslade, media commentator and former editor of the Mirror.

Though the event took place before the Omagh bombing the contributions remain highly relevant. Already the British media has 'moved on' from Omagh to the more titilating subject of the anniversary of Diana Spencers death. We hope to add further items to this section regarding media coverage of the conflict and wish to thank the Damien Walsh Group for permission to reproduce the contributions.
