Founded in France in 1945, Pax Christi's first mission was to
promote reconciliation between French and German Catholics after
the destructive violence of World War II. Fifty years later, Pax
Christi International remains a voice of reconciliation and
healing. It is a growing global voice, and international
movement speaking from the experience and vantagepoint of
twenty-two countries on four continents. It has consultative
status at the UN.
Pax Christi USA, a national section founded in 1972, welcomes
membership from diverse traditions and works in partnership with
concerned people on a variety of issues. But its vision grows
out of the faith and teachings of the Catholic Church. Members
are committed to raising the consciousness of fellow Catholics
through outreach and education. They also speak frankly to the
Catholic community on such issues as nonviolence, war and women's
rights. Pax Christi calls for the church to identify and address
all unjust and oppressive structures.
Pax Christi Atlanta, true to the mission of Pax Christi USA, conducts educational sessions on nonviolence in parishes
throughout the Archdiocese of Atlanta. It is a strong advocate
for the SOA Watch movement seeking to close the School of the
Americas at Ft. Benning, Georgia, participating in nonviolent
demonstrations at the site and lending legislative and other
vocal support. Pax Christi Atlanta opposes the Death Penalty in
the United
States, with individual members visiting and writing prisoners on
Death Row at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in
Jackson. On the 3rd Sunday of each month, at 2:30 in the afternoon, Pax Christi Atlanta meets
in the Katharine Drexel Center at
Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 25 Boulevard NE, near downtown Atlanta,
right across from the King Center. All are welcome!
