COMMODORE’S REPORT

Happy Fall. This is my favorite time of the year with all the trees turning colors and the crisp, cool air.

October 9 we have the “New Member Cruise” to Loch Lochman sponsored by your past commodores. Michael Hershey, Ron Konkle and Bob Steffensen will be your hosts for this cruise. It is a great way to meet other members and get acquainted.

Also this month is the Halloween Party. This is loads of fun and I hope you all come.

We are implementing a paperless service for your monthly statements. If you are interested, please call our club manager and let him know. Also, the club is currently looking into ACH automatic payments for your monthly bill…if this is cost effective, you will have the option on how you pay your monthly bill…with checks like now or with electronic withdrawal from your account.

The California Cruising Clippers donated $250 to OYC as a thank you for the use of our club.

Oyc’s contribution to RBOC this year for $450. John and Sue Roderick will present it at the PICYA delegate meeting.

The Islander 36 groups asked OYC if they could store their trophy in our case. This was approved by the Board of Directors at the September meeting.

Thanks to Tom Charron, Tim Cronin and everyone else who participated in the Point Marina Vista issue next door. Point Marina Vista was issued a conditional use permit. For more information regarding this, contact our club office.

I would like to welcome to OYC; Terri Griffith, John & Rowena Thamm, Damien Campbell, Dan Riordan and Stan & Beth Demski. I would like to welcome back: Denny & Ann Behm, Ken & Lisa Winters and Ray Horowitz & Diane Ericsson. Also, Jim and Margaret Callahan. I hope you enjoy all the activities the club has to offer.

By now you should have received your monthly statements. In your envelope you will find a copy of the General Meeting Agenda for November 7 and, on the back of that flyer, your new proposed Board of Directors for 2010.

Ciao

Autumn Greetings from the Harbor!

Safety

Fortunately, Oakland Yacht Club members are observant, vigilant, and safety conscious! About a month ago, one of our members was sailing his dinghy on the Estuary. Sadly, the skipper and crew of a sailboat, under power, was not following Federal and California boating laws and the rules of the road regarding “maintaining a proper watch”. The OYC member was forced to take extreme evasive maneuvers to avoid being run down by the sailboat and swamped his dinghy in the process. The sailboat continued on its way without stopping or, presumably, even noticing that anything was amiss. Other OYC members quickly came to the assistance of the dinghy sailor in distress, recovering both the soggy OYC member and his boat without injury or damage. Please remember to maintain a careful watch while underway and be aware of activities within our harbor and on the Estuary! Thanks again to the rescuers!

Around the Docks

Progress continues to evaluate our harbor for ongoing and future maintenance needs. We continue to focus on replacing severely splintered decking. We are also taking a close look at maintenance needs and proposed repair projects.

The ramp leading from Gate Six to the harbor is in the process of being replaced. Much thanks to Brent Gill and OYC member volunteers Jim Macintire and Michael Hershey for their help with the project.

The next big project is to replace the connecting walkway between Docks Four and Five. This work should take place in October.

ACS Marine provided a set of kayak racks without charge. The intent is to test the racks on OYC’s docks. The racks are custom made so it may be possible to request modifications to fit OYC’s specific needs. Each rack holds three kayaks and can be mounted on the shore side of an interconnecting dock.

Harbor Committee

The Harbor Committee, meeting at 7 P, the first Thursday of every month except August will continue to address the above issues as well as others. Your input and participation are always welcome. Don’t forget to fill out Fix-it tickets, as appropriate for needed repairs. Blank forms are maintained just outside the Club Manager’s office.

The next Harbor Committee meeting is scheduled in the Regatta Rm., at 1900 (7P), on October 1, 2009. In addition to dinghy/kayak storage, and future plans for Dock One, significant agenda items continue to be: Priority for repairs /reconfiguration; monthly harbor inspections; finances; and the items noted above. Safety and security continue to be primary issues.

Dock One.

Dock One. The Dock One Subcommittee continues work with Encinal Yacht Club (EYC) concerning future plans for Dock One. Tom Charron, Bob Steffensen, and Sandy Jacobson continue to examine all alternatives, including reconfiguration of Dock One to accommodate visiting yachts; and possibly larger berths / side ties.

The existing agreement with EYC expires in April 10.

OYC Committees.

I am continuing my efforts to recruit and select chairs and members of our committees for 2010. Please let me know if you would like to chair or serve on the following committees: Membership, Social, Race, Publicity & Public Affairs, Budget/Finance, Commodores, Risk Management, Education, Merchandise, Cruise, Librarian, Directory, Investment Review, Parliamentarian, Reciprocity, and Sunshine.

Remember: A man is the sum of his actions, of what he has done, of what he can do. Nothing else. - Mohandas K. Gandhi

Happy boating and/or just hanging around the harbor!

Seems like September flew by due to all of our OYC activities:

Sausalito Cruise: We had ten boats and 23 participants for the Sausalito Cruise on Labor Day weekend. Sausalito Yacht Club provided a fabulous dinner on Saturday night and we almost took over their entire dinning room. Tours of the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center, Sausalito Art Festival and several dock parties occupied the rest of our time.
Thank you to Ina Ricketts and Bob Fournier who offered “Tag & Brag” as our dock party headquarters and Ron and Carmen Konkle for driving all the way over to Sausalito to help everyone dock and to introduce us to the Harbor Master. These examples of “pitch-in” attitudes by our members are what make OYC the great Club we enjoy.

Western Night: This was a lower cost special event and it may have helped improve the attendance as we had almost 60 participants. Thank you to Len and Barbara Cardoza and Toni Lyman for helping with the decorations.
We witnessed some very intense competition between tables for the best poker hand. Never underestimate the competitive spirit of our Club members at any activity.

Upcoming Events: Don’t forget the upcoming October events including the New Member Cruise to Loch Lomand and the Halloween Party (check out the OYC website for dates and sign-up).

Get out, have fun and support your Club!

As always, if you have any input or recommendations regarding the House, please send me an email at
connierussell1@comcast.net (note 2 lls in Russell followed by the number 1), give me a call or joins us at the next House Committee Meeting.

Thank you,

Connie Russell

October Social Committee News

It’s official, Fall is here.

I am hearing that Western Night was a huge success. Connie and Mike Russell, Len and Barbara Cardoza and Toni Lyman did the decorations. I hope they took some pictures. Darrell Tucker played the piano, Connie organized games, The movie “Blazing Saddles” was shown and the food was awesome. See the photos (try slide show).

I am sorry we missed it, perhaps next year.

For those of you who have not seen “The Bucket List” make plans on October 17 to come to the club and see it. It was one great movie, with very stunning and unbelievable acting.

Halloween is right around the corner with a party planned at our club. Fun food, take a look, although it’s kind of scary……………

From the Race Deck:

We just held the 11th Annual Schreiber Cup, and had 5 OYC boats come out and 1 land yacht as well. with each vessel correcting out in a dead tie for first. Its just amazing how close the racing is in this event. Our colleagues at TIYC assisted in running a great race.  Christa Schreiber was able to join use aboard Lioness for the starts, she brought some of Bob's favorite banners and stories to liven up the committee boat.

Its been a great season for OYC racers. Estuary and Bay racing has highlighted the talents and perseverance of our racers. From the cold spray of the Sunday Brunch Series in January to the blustery Rights of Spring, through the Sweet 16 and Interclub races of the summer and fall its been a big year. Too many people to mention here, we will award the Perpetual cup during the Change of Watch ceremony and recap the year.

Our last event on 10/3  is the Wallace Cup, we need OYC racers in < 100 PHRF, 100 - 150 PHRF, 150 - 200 PHRF, Multihull and non-spinnaker < 200 PHRF. I will be contacting candidates and I hope to have our best racers out there on the line. To date responses from invited clubs has not been very evident, but we are getting indications there will be some challenges We hope to find out by the skippers meeting 9/26.

I'd like to extend my thanks to my wife Jane, and the rest of the committee for all their support, a harder working bunch of mostly > 70 yr old guys I have not seen. The wise counsel, gentle inputs and occasional blunt questions were all intended to improve the program and the results have been evident. There were routinely 30+ boats racing on the Estuary, and a fair number of the top boats have been OYC members. Others have been from neighboring clubs or even non members, all who have seemed to enjoy the racing and fellowship afterwards. We held a few practice sessions, tutorials and lots of straight races in the season totaling over 29 days of marine events and over a dozen meetings in support.

The staff also deserves thanks from the racers, starting with Craig's assistance in the office and purchasing functions, Brent's help with the RIB and the galley and bar staff in dealing with hordes of racers who descended on them after each event. I have also appreciated the support of the Flag officers and board, and wish that my successor will enjoy the same level of support in the club.

John Tuma has agreed to serve as Race Chair for next year, and he's going to need the same active help and encouragement from the membership that I have had. Please take a moment to send him any suggestions you have for the next season, and come to the RC meetings, to help out and add your voice. Meetings have been traditionally the Second Tuesday of the month, and the next meeting is October 13 at 1900 in the Regatta Room, where we will review lessons learned, decide on trophies and update the events we plan for next year on the YRA calendar.   It  a good way to serve, learn and make good friends.

Respectfully submitted
