HARBOR
VIEW: Mike Jackson, Vice
Commodore The OYC Wednesday evening races, called
the Sweet Sixteen Series, will begin on the 9th of May. Have
you entered yet? Race entry forms are available on the Club's web site
or in the office. There is always a BBQ following the race where you
can sit around the table with a cold beer and tell lies like “I would
have won this race if only …………”
Reconfiguration
Project
As you may recall, our reconfiguration
project has three phases and each of them is intended to convert
unusable 28’ slips into space for new slips for larger boats. The
result of this conversion will be a much fuller harbor and greater
harbor income that we can use to make many more improvements to our
harbor. We now have more than enough vacant 28’ slips to fully justify
the construction of Phase Two of the project and the Board has approved
that construction; this will save a significant amount in construction
costs and avoid approximately $70,000.00 in lost income.
We have had two meetings with the
construction company to review and fine tune their design and we’ll
present those designs to the Harbor Committee during their May meeting.
Permitting is on schedule (I hope) and as of today I am not aware of
anything that will delay the approval of the remaining permits by late
May or early June. With a little luck, we will have: 1) an approved
contract, 2) a completed design, and 3) the bank’s loan offer to present
to our Board of Directors for their review at the May Board meeting. You
are more than welcome to attend. I still can’t give you an exact start
date because a variety of events can still cause further extended
delays. However, we are doing everything possible to move this project
along. |

Around the Harbor
Flowers are
blooming, birds are chirping, and soon most of
us will begin doing various projects on our
boats. As you start these projects, please
remember to keep the area around your boat as
clear of clutter as possible and keep the main
walk way open and safe for other members. Our
harbor’s policies have some built-in flexibility
to allow you to temporarily
stow a few extra things on the finger by your
boat, but they too should be left in a way that
won’t cause a safety hazard to your neighbor.
Thanks for your consideration.
Stay Happy &
Healthy.
Thanks,
Mike Jackson.

FROM
THE HOUSE: Carolyn Hooper, Rear Commodore
I hope by now you have noticed
the improvements the house committee has begun to make to
enhance our club facilities. The new black and white pictures
outside the restrooms, the new pictures in the ladies room and
ladies, we are going to add another mirror on the side wall
which will make it very nice for us. The mens room also is
being spruced up – hope you guys enjoy. The clean-up has
started and things are starting to sparkle.
We still have many members that are new
and have not been introduced to our long time members. Please wear your
badges in the galley and please introduce yourself to one of the flag
officers so we may introduce you to others. We would love to get to know
you and share dinner and stories.
Thanks again to our social committee,
Anne Jacobson and Maria Murray, for a fantastic job at the Wine and Art
Show. They have made the club functions very entertaining and fun. You
guys are great!
Remember, we have
Flamenco night coming
up so lets all gear up for partying!!!
Like I mentioned before, the extended
Sunday brunch hours have been a huge success. The committee is currently
working on more changes (food, drinks, etc). Hopefully, this will be
implemented shortly.
If you have any questions or if I can be
of any assistance, please email me.
See you upstairs……… |

Bill
Niepoth, Education Chair
Coming attractions, loosely defined
An out-of-town friend often sends me jokes
and comments about getting old. He is several years younger than me, and I
think he sends that stuff to rub it in. I get a kick out of most of it, but
occasionally it is too close to home to be amusing. I am at that point in
life where a lot of those funny (and not so funny) comments about old age
apply.
So how is that related to boating and the
OYC? Well, it’s like this. I put off firming up details of the next couple
of educational events and let the Seascape deadline sneak up on me. Sneak
really is not the proper verb, but I will go with it. I suppose the fact
that our Editor is, or was, in China caused me to be a little loose about my
responsibilities. Actually, I could claim I forgot about the deadline . . .
and that would be a clear possibility, given my “senior” status. But, it is
not the main reason.
One of my friend’s email offerings a while
back was about the old guy who couldn’t get anything done. He was either
“over-programmed or underpowered.” The phrase fits in my case. In January,
I went back to work at the University after about 12 years of retirement. I
will spare you the details, but the short of it is I am teaching one class.
The key adjective is one class. Most faculty members teach three or
four classes.
|
|
My excuse
for not being able to announce details about up-coming
opportunities to get smart is that I have been
over-programmed. And, no doubt underpowered.
Nonetheless, I can provide some general information.
Tentative plans are in place for a half-day educational
session in mid-June that will focus specifically on
power boating. If the date works out, there will be
time to provide details in next month’s Seascape. In
addition, there is a good possibility that we will offer
a traveling event sometime in the next couple of
months. It will be on a format similar to the Bay Model
tour the Club sponsored last year, in cooperation with
the U. S. Corps of Engineers. Plans, again tentative,
call for a ferry ride over to San Francisco, a visit to
the National Park Service Maritime Museum and a guided
tour of the square-rigged Balclutha . . . and then
lunch. Keep your eyes peeled, as my father used to say,
for further information about these events.
Last
month, Brooke Bingaman gave an excellent workshop on
weather. The session was on Saturday morning, April 14th.
We had a full house in the Regatta Room. Brooke
presented a great deal of information about how weather
develops, where members of the marine community can get
up-to-the-minute forecasts, and how boaters can make
their own predictions. Brooke has a lot of experience
as a forecaster. She also has been a media weather
announcer and a university teacher. That background
certainly showed in her work with those who attended the
session.

Social Report
May 2007
– Anne Jacobson &
Maria Murray
Chef Patrick did himself proud at the
Winemaker Dinner on April 21st. Dinner was excellent, the
Clos Pegase wines were great, and Jan Schrem (Clos Pegas founder/owner)
gave us an amusing and witty presentation on wine and art, entitled
“Bacchus the Rascal”. We received lots of accolades from among the
90 attendees for the entire event, including Jean Novotny declaring that
Jan was a “hoot”. Members also seemed to enjoy the accompanying
painting exhibition, with watercolors by members of the California
Watercolor Association. And winemaker Mike Rose and wife Diana are the
new proud owners of a painting called “Just Grapes” from the OYC show.
Reservations are now being accepted for
our first ever Flamenco Night. In addition to a buffet of Spanish food,
you’ll be treated to a selection of Spanish wines, hosted by our Club’s
wine representative. The evening kicks off at 6 for cocktails, with a
classical guitar performance by Glenn Staller and buffet at 7.
Following Glenn will be Flamenco singing, dancing, and guitar.
Please join us for a wonderful evening of Spanish food, music and
Flamenco dancing.
A casual summer of activities begins
with the June 16th dock party, followed by the July 4th
pot-luck and fireworks. The Blues & BBQ event on August 4th
will have a new band this year – Blues Cadillac – recommended by
musician/club member Michael Maurier. Summer officially ends at OYC with
the September 15th dock- and new-member-recognition dock
party.
Put us on your calendar, and join us for
all the parties in 2007. Events in
Red
below require reservations.

Baseball Cruise – Save the Date!
In this time of cool winter weather what
is better than to think of those warm days enjoying the green grass of a
baseball field and the sound of the ball when it makes contact with the
sweet spot on the bat. And of course you can’t forget that great smell
of garlic that tops the wonderful garlic fries, not to mention the
brats, beer, and whatever else you want including hotdogs!
Yep, it’s time to start thinking about the
OYC baseball cruise. This year the baseball cruise will be held June
8-10 when the Giants play their local rival the Oakland A’s. As in past
years we have purchased 40 game tickets for the Saturday afternoon game,
and we have also reserved 10 berths at South Beach Harbor.
We always announce this cruise early.
Remember, OYC can only reserve 10 berths and those will go to the first
10 boats to signup. We certainly welcome more participants than that,
but if you are a later signup in order to get a berth you will need to
personally call South Beach Harbor and ask to reserve one. South Beach
will take private reservations starting 60 days in advance of your day
of arrival – in this case starting on April 8th. I was advised by a
harbor official that if you call it is better that you not identify
yourself as part of the OYC cruise since your call could then get
misrouted – just say you are calling to book an individual berth.
The signup sheet will be put out at the
club on Friday, March 9. GO GIANTS!! (Sorry A’s fans...)
OYC MEMBER "BOAT PHOTO
OPPORTUNITY"
On June 2nd between 11
and 1 pm Bob Steffensen will venture forth to the South End of Yerba Buena
Island with Mike Russell aboard vessel Angelique for a OYC Boat Photo
shoot. You can reach Angelique on channel 72. This is a great opportunity
for you to Pass By Angelique and enable Mike Russell to capture your
vessel on film for you and for the OYC Photo Wall in the Club House .

OYC Delta Daze – August 10-17
Mark the days on your calendar now for our annual Delta Cruise. We will be working on the details, and promise updates in the near future. This year we will be cruising off the “hook.” We will not make marina reservations, however you may book dates at nearby marinas on your own. You will need a dinghy to participate successfully in the cruise. Likewise your anchor light should be operational, your propane tanks full and your water tanks topped off.
schedule: First rendezvous Sunday, Aug 12 at 1100 hrs at Decker Island for a gin fizz party. Over night at Decker Island on the hook. Monday, cruise Three-Mile Slough to Potato Slough, overnight on the hook. Tuesday move on to Three River Reach for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Friday members may go on to Georgiana Slough for more cruising enroute to Steamboat Slough or return to the Bay.
There will be activities to sharpen the mind and nonsense to make you smile. Nothing is mandatory except sunblock. Signup sheet will be available about June 1.
If you have questions, please contact us.Jim & Diana Jessie 510-769-6753 <alaskannalu@cs.com>

Sail down to Catalina
Island
Hello cruisers
At the request on a number of boat
owners who would like to get a little offshore experience we are
putting together a cruise to Catalina Island this summer
Catalina Yachts is having its
25th annual gathering on July 13 & 14th at
Two Harbors and we have been invited to join them. Because of the very
busy summer season and availability of moorings it is best to arrive
by Wednesday July 11th to assure a mooring ball. That being
said, we can depart the gate on Sunday to arrive by midweek if we sail
directly. Those that want to depart earlier and stop at Monterey or
other ports along the way would be free to do so. This trip is not
limited to Catalina sailboats, all boaters are welcome to join us.
Should the weather not co-operate due to
sea conditions that are not satisfactory, we would perhaps stop at
Monterey for a shortened cruise.
You may elect to return from Catalina
via a short visit to a Southern California port. Transient berths are
generally available should your schedule or weather preclude you from
an immediate return trip home.
We are planning a meeting on May
5th at 6:30 in the Regatta Room at OYC. If you would like
to sail down with us or just learn more about our plans please feel
free to join us. Our goal is to provide an overnight sailing and
navigation experience.
