OYC Winemaker's Dinner, April 4th
|
I first want to welcome our new members that were nominated and
approved by your Board of Directors in February: Tom Antonelli &
Jean Francone; Edward Cranmer-Brown; Frank Wilson and Larry
Boyle. I hope you all enjoy being members of the Oakland Yacht
Club and enjoy the many activities available to you. If you would
like to volunteer for any committees, please let me or our club
manager know. I would also like to welcome Bill and Alison Fishel
back - at their request, they have been reinstated and we are very
happy to have them back - they were greatly missed.
The California Cruising Clippers sent a letter thanking us for
making their cruise in January so successful. They complimented
all of our staff for their good humor and smiles and think our
club is beautiful (which we all know it is).
Doug Hipsley, past Commodore of OYC and Past President of
Recreational Boaters of California, who now gives presentations to
yacht clubs about RBOC and the newest laws for boaters, came to
the February Board meeting and gave a very interesting and
delightful talk. Thank you Doug.
The Predicted Log Racing Association of Northern California
needs 2 more power boats to complete the 2009 racing schedule.
Besides many fun filled weekends, you will have the opportunity to
meet new friends and enjoy different clubs around the Bay for the
year. If interested, contact Ran Wyder at 510-913-0053 or send an
email to him at

I want to thank Mike Russell for taking his time to clean all
the flags hanging in our dining room. He took each one down,
washed it and put it back up again. This, my fellow club members,
was a heck of a lot of work. They needed it badly and Mike did a
wonderful job. Thank you again Mike.
The House Committee cleaned all the plants and rocks in the
lobby area and what a difference it makes. It was really bad and
I want to thank you ladies very much. Also, what would we do
without Carmen Konkle who keeps our landscaping looking beautiful.
Some of the past Commodore pictures upstairs are very old and
Mike Russell again has come forward and is looking into taking
each picture down and doing what photographers do to preserve the
picture.
Last month you received a one sheet Commodore Log in your
monthly statement. I have had wonderful feedback regarding this
because some of us like to read the events without opening our
computers and the Seascape is still available on the OYC
website. Frank Hooper has taken the task on of printing all of
these with no cost to our club. Thank you Frank for your efforts
and for paying for the paper to print them on. If you have any
comments or would like to add something to this, please let me
know.
Our membership committee is currently looking into various
programs to promote membership including Kyaks and learn to sail
programs. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
I want to thank Roy Stark, our Membership Chair, for manning
the OYC booth at the Marina Village boat show on February 19-22.
Roy diligently sat during miserable rainy weather to promote our
club. Also, I want to thank Frank Hooper for helping set up the
booth.
Frank Hooper is currently obtaining ads for the OYC directory
which is close to being finished. This is a great way to
advertise so if you would like to place an ad, please contact him
at
fghooper38@earthlink.net
Under Oakland Yacht Club links there are many informative
web sites for boaters. This is a great source for information.
See you at the bar.

HOUSE View: Connie Russell, Rear Commodore
The Social Committee and House Staff have been very busy this
February:
Crab Feed: If you didn’t attend the Crab Feed you missed a great event. There was plenty of crab, pasta and music. Members seemed to enjoy lingering at the tables long after the food was gone. Valentines Day
Dinner: Kudos to Chef, Kris and the House staff for preparing an
excellent Valentines Day dinner. We had an intimate group of about
40 people attending. A few prospective members and visitors from
other clubs complemented the great food, service and hospitality of
OYC members. Lobby Atrium: On Saturday Feb. 7th, a small work group led by June Steffensen cleaned the lobby atrium and replaced several of the plants. Thanks to June, Louie Johns and Michael Russell for the great job. Flag Cleaning: I’m happy to report that the flag cleaning is complete, thanks to Michael Russell. (You get the best jobs when you are the spouse or “significant other” of a Flag Officer.) The next project will be attempting to preserve some of the fading Staff Commodore photographs. Greeter Program: I hope you’ve noticed that we’ve re-established the Friday Night Greeter program. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be twisting some arms to get more volunteers. This is a fun assignment that only takes 1 hour of your time. You only need to smile, introduce yourself and occasionally give a few hugs! Club Security: In response to House Committee discussion regarding improving Club security, the timers for outside lights have been adjusted and lights will remain on until 5AM. What’s Next? The Ladies Luncheon is just around the corner, so make sure you have Saturday, March 7th on your calendar. Bring your best friends and relatives and enjoy a fun time and chance to win some great raffle prizes. Also make sure to reserve Saturday, April 4th for the Winemakers Dinner. Anne Jacobson will be providing further details of this event in the next few weeks. As always, if you have any input or recommendations regarding the House, please send me an email at connierussell1@comcast.net (note 2 lls in Russell followed by the number 1), give me a call or join us at the next House Committee Meeting.
Thank you, Connie Russell Rear Commodore |

OYC Crooze Nooze March cruise out to Corinthian Yacht Club is fully subscribed for boats but you can check with me at the last minute to see if there were any cancellations. You can also take the nice drive over to Tiburon for some afternoon shopping and then dinner on Saturday night (March 23). Asphalt cruisers are always welcome but please let Wayne Martin know so he can make the dinner reservations. Anne and Sandy Jacobsen are partnering with Wayne and Carol Martin as the Cruise Captains. Wayne and Carol have a previous commitment for the weekend so Anne and Sandy will be handling the on-site duties. Thanks Martins and Jacobsens! The April cruise is all the way to Aeolian Yacht Club located under the bridge to Bay Farm Island. As was the case last year, the Cardozas are handling the Captain duties. The Aeolian group is always fun to be with since many of us long time Alameda based Yacht Clubbers have good friends at Aeolian. They will be serving dinner on both Friday and Saturday (reservations required) and word has it that the bar will be open periodically. If you want to go by boat, they have a large deepwater guest dock. If you are an asphalt cruiser, it’s about a 10 minute drive. The dates are April 24 and 25. May is the traditional trip to South Beach Yacht Harbor for a Giants game. This year, the Mets are in town. The ambiance and food is great at Red’s Java house (lunch and breakfast). We have tickets for the Saturday afternoon game so you shouldn’t need your Arctic cold weather gear and so your evening will be free for any of the very many great restaurants in the area. In addition to going by boat, you can go by asphalt, either by crossing the Bay Bridge or BARTing under the Bay. Plenty of low cost public transportation for sight seeing. We need ticket orders early because they go fast and are difficult to get once we get close to game day. I will have two sign-up sheets. One for the Yacht Harbor reservations and one for tickets. I’m still looking for four folks to Captain the Delta Yacht Club cruise (July 6-10). This is a great facility with swimming pool, great hospitality and within dinghy range of lots of Delta attractions. The week after DYC, the Jessie’s are once again leading the Delta Cruising Experiencing, much of which is anchoring in some great spots. Stay tuned for details. If you have questions, please contact me at daswitzer25@msn.com or 925-939-0236.

Hi everyone!
"Beware the Ides of March" Who said that and
who did he say it to?
Well, we had crab, and then we had more crab and then we had even more crab, that pretty much sums up the annual crab feed on the 21st. It was wonderful, I even attempted to purchase any leftovers, NOT! Mark your calendars and plan to attend our next winemakers dinner. This dinner, arranged by Anne will feature the Jacuzzi Family Vineyard and it's sister winery, Cline Cellar. This will be Saturday April 4th. A six course gourmet Italian dinner, preceded with olive oil tasting during our cocktail hour. The olive oil tasting begins at 6:00 PM, dinner at 7:00 PM, cost per person is $55.00 Cinco De Mayo is happening on May 2nd. Think music, margaritas and mojitos. Music this year is: "Conjunto Romero" a Tex-Mex/Norteno family band which plays a very danceable blend of Mexican/Tejano music. Their repertoire includes the traditional South-Texas Conjunto styles with many Polkas, Schottises and Redovas. This family band consists of two brothers, their father, their sister, their cousins and their mom. This family band will provide us with a very lively and entertaining evening. Have a great March, and a fun St. Patties Day. We look forward to seeing you at the winemakers dinner and Cinco De Mayo.

From the Race Deck:
February racing has been variable between zephyrs and gusts, with gentle breezes on Superbowl Sunday followed by spirited racing on the 15th amidst overcast, rain and 20+ winds. Results are linked off the racing pages ! Our last race of the Sunday Brunch series will be March 1st, with a racing rules seminar presented by Bill Colombo of Doyle Sails, come on down and sail, many boats need crews, see Sheldon Haynie or Jane Mika if you are a skipper or a prospective crew. We hope to have photography on the water for our last race, and images will be posted to the web along with the popular You Tube videos of the starts.
Looking ahead, the Rites of Spring race will be
April 18th, for short handed racers, and the Interclub racing season
also starts that day out on the bay.
The Wednesday night Sweet Sixtheen races start
in May and run to September with holiday in July, we will host a
practice night, with starts for experienced and novice divisions, to
encourage racers with limited experience to come out.
respectfully submitted,
Race Committee

Urgent Legislative Issues Asking for your Support: A primary issue of concern to PICYA is the proposed elimination of the State Department of Boating and Waterways. Unless boaters act NOW, we could see the department gone in the next month or so! This is an URGENT matter and we would ask all members to send in letters as soon as possible to the Governor, senator and assemblypersons opposing this action. The President of RBOC (Recreation Boaters of California) reported at the February 2nd PICYA Delegates meeting that “The proposal to scuttle the independent Cal boating would negatively impact at lest $72 million annually in vital, boating-related programs and services, in order to accomplish dinghy-sized savings.” More specific information is available on the web site www.rboc.org – just click on “Call to Arms” located on the left of their home page. There you will also find a sample letter for you to send. Thank you for acting on this most important boating issue. As most of you know, RBOC is the legislative arm of PICYA and as such they keep us apprised of all issues small and large that impact recreational boaters. Some of the other issues they are working on include the boater education bill, the abandoned (turn-in) boat legislation, and the copper-based anti-fouling paint regulation as they continue to develop. For all the current issues facing recreational boaters, please go to the web site www.rboc.org and click on “The Issues” menu at the bottom of their home page. Delegate Meeting – February 2nd The PICYA delegate meeting was hosted by Oakland Yacht Club on February 2nd. Over 125 people attended the dinner meeting and were treated to a wonderful dinner and fantastic customer service – from bartenders to wait staff. Although Commodore Hooper was unable to bring greetings to the group that evening, we stood in her path to thank Oakland YC for its fantastic generosity and hospitality. Many kudos to Elaine Mendes, Chef Kris, bartenders Betty and Sharine, and wait staff Catalina, Ramona, Grace and Alicia. Thanks to all who made this event successful. Installation of 2009 PICYA Flag Officers The PICYA Commodores’ Ball and Installation of Officers took place at St. Francis Yacht Club on January 31st. This was one of the largest turnouts we have had with 238 people representing 58 yacht clubs attending. New flag officers of PICYA are Commodore William Needham, Vice Commodore Linda Breninger, Rear Commodore Reginald Smith and Secretary Treasurer John Roderick. A photo of PICYA’s new officers appears elsewhere in this newsletter. Opening Day on the Bay – April 26th The theme for Opening Day on the Bay this year is “Legends of the Sea” and we have put up a large poster on the back porch with initial information for you. There are several ways members can enjoy Opening Day on the Bay: (1) Decorating your boat to theme and participating in the parade; (2) Just cruising in your boat on Opening Day and participating in the parade; (3) Joining others on a Hornblower boat that is the Committee Boat where you can enjoy cocktails, buffet lunch and view the parade with other members and the judges themselves, and (4) Taking your boat down Raccoon Strait in the morning of Opening Day for the Blessing of the Fleet that takes place in front of Corinthian Yacht Club. Remember, the more members participate in Opening Day activities, the more points we can earn for club of the year! As always, if you have any issues you would like to be brought up to either PICYA or RBOC, let us know.
