OYC Winemaker's Dinner, April 4th
Coast Guard Facilities Tour, April 11th
|
Looks like Spring is here...beautiful blossoms on the
trees, warm weather and the water is inviting. I hope all our
members enjoy the balconies of the club and use their boats. Maybe
the "neglected" boats can get a wash and wax now that the weather
is agreeable.
Unfortunately the Ladies' Luncheon was cancelled due to a lack of sing-ups. We all need to support our club and try to come to the social events. This is a wonderful way to meet new people. Also, thanks to the House Committee, there will be ballroom dancing taught one Friday night a month. The first session is scheduled for Friday, April 10th at 8:15 pm. Lessons will continue on the second Friday of each month for $6 per person. Please come - it should be lots of fun. A thank you to Carmen Konkle for the landscaping in front of the Club House. She has done this for many years and because of her it always looks well kept. Thank you again Carmen. Saturday, April 11 is the tour of the Sector San Francisco Coast Guard facilities. The signup sheet is at the club. There is limited space so please sign up if you would like to attend. The baseball cruise out this year will be for a day game on Saturday, May 16. The Giants vs the Mets. South Beach Marina is full that weekend but we have been able to reserve 12 slips in the new Pier 39 Marina. |

A thank you to Frank Hooper for helping bring revenue to the club.
Along with getting over $5000 in ads for our directory, he set up a
"Buck a Foot Rebate" with Svendsens. Here is how it works: (1) bring
your boat to Svendsens for a haul out and bottom job or a complete
engine service (2) present your OYC membership card and a coupon
(which will be in the club office) and, (3) Svendsens will give $1
in rebate to OYC for each linear foot of your boat.
The harbor inspections continue and because of this the general conditions of the docks continue to improve. Minor maintenance items are provided to our club manager for appropriate action. The combined Power Boat and Sail Broker show at Jack London Square is on April 15 - April 19. OYC will have a booth so please come. Mark your calendars for the Rights of Spring Race on April 18. OYC has participated in the ad in the PICYA Log regarding Opening Day weekend on the bay which is April 24, 25 and 26th. The ad mentions that on Sunday, breakfast will be served from 8:30 am to noon. I hope everyone comes and shares the fun. For those members who have asked, all OYC's food prices include tip and tax. A welcome to our new members David & Jill Wolfe....Mona & Roger Elliott will be mentors. Also, I am so pleased to welcome back Tim and Melisse Cronin who are back to regular member status and are bringing their new boat into the marina. I have had such an overwhelming positive response to the abbreviated Seascape that comes to you monthly in your statement....I'm glad you like it. Carolyn Hooper, Commodore

Corinthian Yacht Club (CYC) Cruise:
Mike and I just returned from a great weekend on the CYC Cruise-out.
Over 20 members enjoyed this cruise. OYC power, sail and asphalt
sailors were well represented despite the very windy conditions.
Thank you to Sandy and Anne Jacobson and Wayne and Carol Martin,
Co-Cruise Captains, for a fun time.
Dinner at CYC was very good, but also expensive. CYC adds $4.95 to dinner prices for the soup and salad bar and a gratuity of 16% plus taxes is added to the price of the meal. Consequently the total dinner price including gratuity and taxes was approximately $30 per person for chicken marsala, $35 for sea bass and $40 for fillet mignon. Based upon this comparison with CYC, our typical OYC pricing of $18-22 for entrée, soup and salad bar, coffee and gratuity and tax (included) is a real bargain. OYC Memorabilia: Craig Wong was recently notified of a vintage OYC trophy listed for sale on eBay. The trophy is for a 1947 Oakland to Vallejo Cal Boat race. The OYC logo is in the top left hand corner. The House authorized the purchase and we were successful in obtaining the trophy for under $30 plus $8.00 shipping. We are currently waiting for delivery and will let members know when it arrives and where it will be displayed. What’s next? Winemaker’s Dinner, April 4th: Maybe this is an indication that the economy might be improving a bit, as there are over 70 sign-ups for the Winemaker’s Dinner. This one should be very interesting as Anne Jacobson, chair for this event, has arranged for olive oil tasting as well as wine tasting; all to complement Kris’s great food, of course. Ballroom Dance Lessons, Start April 10th: The House Committee has scheduled a local Alameda couple to teach ballroom dancing. First session is will be Friday, April 10th at 8:15 pm. Future lessons will continue on the second Friday of each month. Price is $6 per person per lesson. Lessons will last approximately 1 hour and you only pay for sessions that you attend. Sign-ups are not required but appreciated. The sign-up sheet is at the Club Manager’s office. Rites of Spring Dock Party, Saturday April 18th: Since the Rites of Spring race is scheduled for Saturday, April 18th, this will be a good excuse for an impromptu dock party for all members, not just racers. Bring your favorite appetizer to share and get to know your boat neighbors. Estimated dock party start time is approximately 4:00-4:30PM. When I use the word impromptu that means there is no host for this event and we will need to all pitch-in and possibly help set-up tables and clean-up, but think of all the fun you will have! Also this dock party will be a BYOB event. The Club will be open for dinner that evening. As always, if you have any input or recommendations regarding the House, please send me an email at connierussell1@comcast.net (note 2 lls in Russell followed by the number 1), give me a call or join us at the next House Committee Meeting.
Thank you, Connie Russell Rear Commodore |

OYC Crooze Nooze Plans are being finalized for the Coast Guard tour on April 11. We had almost two dozen members sign up and I am working with the PIO to see if we can send two groups on the same day. Dave Marshburn has agreed to be the “Cruise Captain”. I will communicate directly with those who signed up once plans are firm. The Aeolian cruise is April 24 – 26. The Cardoza’s are the cruise captains. Low tide on April 24 is 06:23 and it’s a minus tide. High is at 13:08. If you do not want to move your boat, come by car. It’s a great club. The Baseball cruise is May 15 – 17. The Mets are in town and it is an afternoon game. The sign-up sheet for tickets is at the club. If you made reservations directly with South Beach Marina or Pier 39, please indicate this on the sign-up sheet. I have made several reservations for boats at Pier 39 and will have slip assignments the week before the cruise. Moorage at Pier 39 must be paid in advance, so please let me know immediately if you do not require reservations. The June cruise is to St. Francis Yacht Club and this is one of the highlights of the year. Valerie Smith has volunteered as a cruise co-captain and I would like a volunteer to work with her. Sausalito Yacht Club emailed me with a cruise-in invitation for single boats or small groups. http://www.syconline.org/ The Cruise Director will find slips convenient to the club house for anyone who is interested. His contact information is: Jeff Polick Cruise Director I received a similar invitation from Marin Yacht Club. Dave Watson is the contact there and his phone number is 415-456-9792 or harbormaster@marinyachtclub.com There are plans for two weeks
in the Delta this year. We have reservations for Delta Yacht Club July
6 – 10. This is a wonderful facility (with a swimming pool) and a friendly
club. Then the next week (July 13 – 19), the Jessies are leading a Delta
Experience cruise. Most nights will be spent gunk holing on the hook. If
you have not experienced this, it is well worth the trip. We need two
volunteer captains for the Delta Yacht Club event. Doug Switzer

April brings us so much, we get to enjoy Property, Federal
and State taxes, and then The Easter Bunny comes. All this within 5 days,
WHEW…………….However our days are getting longer which is a good thing. We are so looking forward to the Jacuzzi Family Vineyard and Cline Cellars winemakers’ dinner this coming Saturday. I know it will be a special event, and certainly hope to see most of you there.
We had an e-mail from Maria Murray, the social co-chair before the three of us. She mentioned the Celtic Fest and might we do one next year. Knowing how well received this event was, we resounded with an empathic YES. I know it is a year away, but we can begin to look forward to it. Having always been a Michael Flatley and Riverdance fan, you can be assured that I certainly will.
It was disappointing that the Ladies Luncheon had to be canceled. We were looking forward to it. Hopefully next year, the committee will schedule it again and we will have more ladies who will commit.
Mariachis, Margaritas, Mojitos, Mescal, and Music equal Cinco de Mayo. May 2, wear your sombreros and sandals. As mentioned in March we have the returning group Conjunto Romero. They are a fun and lively family Tex-Mex/Norteno band. Everyone will be on their feet and this group will bring it all together.
Summer fun and festive events to look forward to are Dock parties on June 13 and July 4th. The luau is scheduled for July 11. Please mark your planners so you do not miss out.
I want to mention in closing the horrific slaying of the four police officers in our neighboring city. We are so deeply saddened and feel such sorrow for the families of these four brave men. I cannot even imagine how so many lives will be affected by this needless and senseless tragedy. In these times of such uncertainty, each of our days and all of our friends and families need to be treasured.
Until May,

Life
Memberships We have a new addition to the Regatta Room, the Life Membership recognition wall. Oakland Yacht Club has two life members, Dick Saylor and Jim Jessie. The Life Member award is given for distinguished and meritorious service. Both men have been members for several decades. Longevity distinguishes the Life Members from others. Any of us can be enthusiastic and work for the club for a few years, but few have the dedication to work long hours, days, and months for decades. However, longevity is far from the most important criteria. Being a member for years and taking responsibility for making the club successful requires continuous effort and participation. In the case of Dick Saylor, a member since 1966, he became a life member because he was commodore when the need to leave Oakland became apparent and stayed on for a second term as commodore to make it happen. In those days, we did not have a club manager so the commodore was the responsible party. His efforts resulted in the marina and club we enjoy today. The club honored Staff Commodore Saylor with a Life Membership in 1981. Jim Jessie was six years old when his father joined Oakland Yacht Club. In 1954, he joined as a member in his own right. He had already begun to establish a reputation in yacht racing. He spearheaded the junior program in the late 40’s. He owned the shipyard adjacent to the Oakland facility and was de facto harbormaster from 1957 until 1971, when he became a marine surveyor. He continued to race on the Bay and the Pacific winning 17 season championships in the Bird class, and serving as the navigator on Zamazaan in the Pan Am Clipper Cup. He received the Navigator’s trophy for the series. His racing continues to this day. He is a circumnavigator and continues to support and enjoy messing about in boats. He received the Life Membership in 2008. The Life Membership is not something for which we can apply, and it won’t happen just because we pay our dues. It is an honor given after considerable and serious contemplation. The primary objective of OYC has always been “to foster the sport of yachting and encourage both power and sail boat racing in the Bay Area.” The second objective is “to improve boating conditions, laws, regulations, and boat handling skills.” The third is “To bring people together in the interest of boating and associated social functions.” These objectives are the reason this club will soon celebrate its centennial. These objectives are primary in Life Membership selection. Future Life Members will find themselves in good company in our yachting family. |

Prestigious Staff Commodores Award given to Doug Hipsley
One of the most valued awards given annually by PICYA is the Staff Commodores Award – the Silver Star – given to an individual who has given valuable service to the boating community. This year’s recipient is Doug Hipsley, Past Commodore of Oakland Yacht Club (1994). Doug was honored for his extraordinary service and contributions over many years to yacht clubs, individuals and other organizations serving the interests of boaters. Doug is a member of the Board of Directors for RBOC (Recreational Boaters of California). He resides in Santa Cruz and is a member of Santa Cruz Yacht Club and San Francisco Shrine Yacht Club. The photo shows PICYA Staff Commodore Dedrick Denison awarding the Silver Star to Doug. Congratulations!
Opening Day on the Bay – April 26th We want to encourage members to come out for a glorious day on April 26th – the Opening Day on San Francisco Bay! “Legends of the Sea” is the theme for this year’s parade of decorated boats – if you don’t want to decorate your boat to theme, you can just put on some flags and streamers and join in the fun. Take your vessel through the Blessing of the Fleet in Raccoon Strait at 10:30 to noon and join the parade at noon. For those who want to see the wonderful plethora of vessels in the Bay that day, there are seats available on the Committee Boat. This year the Committee Boat is the beautiful Hornblower Empress. We board the Empress at Encinal Yacht Club that morning for a full day on the bay. It is a wonderful experience with continental breakfast and a full buffet lunch. The “early bird” special is $65 per person (if you reserve a spot before April 6th.) After that date, the cost is$75 per person. For more information go to www.picya.org.
Yachting Yearbooks Now Available! The 2009 Yachting Yearbook is now

helpful and beneficial to Northern California boaters. Call the
office to reserve your copy. See you around the club!
