Harbor Reconfiguration Project
Update |
I can hardly believe my eyes - our harbor reconfiguration is nearly complete! I think it’s now safe to say that we’ll finish this project ahead of schedule and almost exactly on budget. The major moves and installations have been completed. We now have 11 new 38 foot downwind slips on Pier Five and 13 new 44 foot upwind slips on Pier Six. All of these new slips should be available for occupancy during the first week of April and Craig has begun contacting members on the slip waiting list. The County’s certification of our new electrical meters may take a few extra days; however, I doubt that anyone will object to a few days of free electricity. When you look at Pier Six, you’ll see that the central walkway has been re-decked (finally). This huge effort was accomplished thanks to several members who volunteered their time, sweat, and backs for the Club's benefit. Please see Len Cardoza’s SeaScape article for more details. We also are replacing three fingers on Pier Six and five fingers on Pier Seven as a part of our Reconfiguration Project. When all the boats on these two piers were moved, we saw that some of these fingers should have been replaced years ago. What’s next for our harbor? Your Board of Directors has approved a long-term (fourteen years) Harbor Plan that maps out the amount of money that we must set aside each year to rebuild our entire harbor with little or no resulting debt. This completed Reconfiguration Project is the first phase of that long-term Harbor Plan. |

|
Your Board also has approved offering an incentive to prospective members that gives them half off their initiation fee and free slip fees for the first month. This offer will expire on June 1 and applies to any size slip. If you know anyone who may want to join our great yacht club, they should contact Craig as soon as possible. Lastly, as a result of the harbor’s reconfiguration, we have a few vacant 42’ to 44’ slips. If you have a boat that is between 39 and 45 feet and are interested, please contact Craig. Please watch for the announcement about our summer Wednesday evening racing series. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy a mid-week break. If you’d like to volunteer to help the Race Committee, please get in touch with Steve Shaffer. If you’d like to learn how to race by crewing for someone, let Steve know and he can steer you toward a good boat and skipper. Check the Club's social calendar for coming events and sign up early if you are interested. The Wine Makers Dinner is coming soon and if the past is an example, this will be a wonderful evening with good friends, excellent food, and outstanding wine. Please don’t forget that your Board of Directors meets at 7:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month (except August) - your attendance is always welcomed. Have a Safe and Healthy Month, Mike

Of Lines, Knots and Splices . . . Or, So You
Think You’re a Mariner?
Now, back to the question in the title. Some acquaintances of mine think that, if you cannot tie 10 or 12 basic knots and do some splicing, you really cannot claim to be a mariner. Whether you agree with that or not, some knots are necessary for the efficient and safe handling of boats. And, there also is the matter of looking good. Some of the contortions of lines you occasionally see when you walk the docks are flat out embarrassing (at other docks, of course).
I am sure you can tie a square knot and a
clove hitch. And, you no doubt use half-hitches all the time. How about
a buntline hitch or a sheet bend . . . or a becket hitch? Chapman lists 19
different knots in the chapter on lines, knots and splices . . . I’ve
never heard of some of them. But, one we all know is the bowline. Chapman
claims that this is the most useful knot you can use on a boat. I don’t
doubt it, and I have tied it thousands of times. But, I still get it
wrong now and then. “Let’s see. The rabbit goes around the bush and into
the hole,” or how does that go? And then there is splicing. Another time-honored way to make a loop in the end of a line is an “eye splice.” If you can do that your credentials as a seafarer are pretty solid. If you cannot, you can learn how on Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, in the Regatta Room. OYC member Larry Zabel has arranged for a couple of riggers from West Marine to come over and teach us how to make different kinds of splices in double-braid and three strand lines. This will be a hands-on workshop. The riggers will provide the line and needed instructions. You do the rest. There is no charge, but there will be a limit of 15 participants so we are requesting pre-registrations. You can sign up at the office, or by phone (510-522-6868) or email (cwong@oaklandyachtclub.com). So come out on April 12 and get smart about splicing. It is a useful skill, and it adds considerably to your bragging rights. One other thing. The USCG Auxiliary will conduct vessel safety checks at the Club on Sunday morning, April 13. The announcement in this issue of the Seascape provides the details. |

Notes from the Cruising Chairman
April will find OYC going in two different directions. April 5th and
6th will find us
at SFYC and April 26-27 will be at Aeolian YC. See various sign up
sheets. Cruising is a time to reconnect with OYC members “friends old
and new.” Remember the old rhyme “one is silver and the other gold.”
It’s never too early to clear your summer calendar for the plethora of
cruises OYC is sponsoring. The summer of “08” truly has something for
everyone. The Jessie’s are heading up the anchor outs the week of July19th.
The Elliott’s are leading troops to the Delta Yacht Club week of August
17th. October 10th thru
12th finds the
Batchelder’s and Grona’s leading the “Return to Tinsley.” It’s never too
early to get your galley tested recipes dusted off. I am personally
working on perfecting my lemon pistachio bread. I still remember June
Steffensen’s fruit filled crepes and Vicky Dewar’s caviar dip at Tinsley
last year. OYC’s cruises are all about inspiring laughter, smiles and
memories. We never know when whatever the reason we may be unable to
cast off our dock lines anymore. We want to have plenty of great OYC
memories to think on and “remember, we’ll always have Tinsley.” See ya
on the water!
Hugs,
Roxanne Grona

AND THEN THERE ARE THREE!!
Super news from the social committee, we are now a three member strong committee. We would like to welcome Pattie Bolduc, who has graciously agreed to be one of the committee chairs for our social committee. Pattie is one of the directors of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, and she and her husband Kendall are new members of the Oakland Yacht Club. We warmly welcome Pattie and Kendall Bolduc. Toni and I are looking forward to her ideas and awesome energy. Additionally, she is walking distance to the club.
Spring fling was fun and truly enjoyed by the children who participated in the decorating and the hunting of Easter eggs.
April 19, features our wine makers dinner, the menu sounds like something I would read from the best eateries in Manhattan. Kris is so imaginative. The wines of the Navarro vineyard will be pared with Kris’s selections. Thanks again to Anne Jacobson for all of her hard work in arranging this dinner.
Mark your calendars and plan to attend our Cinco de Mayo event on Saturday May 3. There will be Margaritas, Corona, Tequila, maybe even some Mescal, and authentic Cinco de Mayo fare created by Chef Kris. Conjunto Romero will provide us with some lively, infectious, and a hot-blooded mixture of Mexican ranchera and German polka. This Norteno music was created in Texas by Mexican-Americans, who were exposed to the polka beat that the German immigrants had brought to the Lone Star State from Europe**. Now, how many of you knew that?
Adios until May, we remain your three social chairs*** Inez, Pattie and Toni ** Written by Alex Henderson *** We are working on a name, any ideas? Events in Red below require reservations.

Oakland Yacht Club Harbor Reconfiguration Project Update Len Cardoza March 27th, 2008 See the photos There is light at the end of the reconfiguration tunnel and it is not a train heading towards us! I am delighted to report that the project to reconfigure Docks 5, 6, and 7 is over 90% complete. Western Dock Enterprises is the general contractor. As previously reported, this is the first phase of a larger project to reconfigure the harbor for increased safety and efficiency. The goal of the project is maximum utilization of OYC harbor property. The reconfiguration will result in fewer small berths and additional larger berths to match member demographics and accommodate vessels currently on the waiting list. Docks 5, 6 and 7 are complete, except for electrical work on Dock 6. Utility pedestals and electrical meters have been received (one pedestal top was damaged during transit and the manufacturer notified accordingly). Electrical work, including the installation of the utility pedestals, continues. Safety railings for the landings on Docks 6 &7 are also complete, including end caps.
OYC staff and members noted during the moving of the docks that several existing (old) fingers on Docks 6 & 7 were unstable. Apparently the boats were holding the dock fingers in place with their dock lines, rather than the other way around! The Harbor Committee recommended and OYC Board of Directors approved a contract mod to install an additional finger on the west side of Dock 6 to create a new berth and the replacement of unstable fingers on Docks 6 and 7 during meetings in March. The contractor is working on the new fingers for Docks 6 &7, anticipating installation during the week of 3/31. The OYC Project Delivery Team practiced their steely-eyed gazes and conducted an interim inspection of completed work during a walk through with the contractor on 3/25. OYC staff and members worked hard, starting 3/21, to re-deck Dock 6. A partial list of volunteers follows: Bob Becker, Paul Cahill, Len Cardoza, Emile Carles, Jim Catto, Tom Charron, Jay Chase, Lee Deckard, Jim Jesse, Jim MacIntire, Mike Russell, Brent Gill, Craig Wong, Mike Jackson, and Dick Johnson. Special thanks to Commodore Jackson for organizing and supervising this much needed work! Beneficial occupancy (movement of vessels to Dock 6) is anticipated 4/4. Please watch for updates on the Club’s bulletin board! |

Delta Days Reminder
All this cold weather turns our thoughts to summer cruising in the Delta. The cruise will be July 19-26. It's a long way off but we want you to think about spending the week in the Delta being a real cruiser. We will not be using marinas for overnighting. We will be close enough to some that you can make use of them. We will be in dinghy range for food and potables. Since many of you are new to cruising and haven't had an opportunity to anchor out, we are planning a quick review for those interested. Please email us directly at <alaskannalu@cs.com> to let us know of your interest and availability. Those boats that have 110 electrical systems, please let us know so we can help out with charging. This cruise will necessitate using a dinghy. If you have questions about dinghies or their operation, please let us know. Stay warm and think about a summer in the Delta. Best wishes, Jim & Diana Jessie

Cruise-Out to Aeolian Yacht Club Len Cardoza, 2/28/08 OYC is planning a cruise-out to Aeolian Yacht Club on April 25-27. Planning is underway for a possible pot-luck on Friday evening, April 25, followed by dinner at AYC on Saturday, April 26. The sign up notice will be posted at OYC on Friday, April 4, 2008. Please contact Muggs Zabel at 510 227 5337 or Len Cardoza at (w) 510 627 1307; (res) 510 638 1025; (cell) 510 333 4342 for additional information.
USCG Auxiliary to Conduct Vessel Safety Checks On Sunday morning, April 13, from 8:30 to around noon, members of the USCG Auxiliary, Flotilla 12-2, will be on hand to conduct vessel safety checks at the Club. If you berth your boat next door, at Marina Village, the inspectors can do it there also. As you probably know, a check involves one or two examiners going on board to look at things like fire extinguishers, distress signals, personal floatation devices, etc. This gives you a risk-free way to see how your boat and equipment stack up against state and federal regulations. No citations, just good information from friendly experts. The check assures you that you have the stuff needed for safe boat operation. Each one takes about 20 minutes or so. If you would like one for your boat, let the OYC office know. We will keep a schedule of appointments. Here’s an idea. Come over to the Club for Sunday brunch (8:30 am. to 12 noon) and get a safety check at the same time. How can you beat that?
Splicing Workshop at the OYC
There will be a splicing workshop at the OYC
on Saturday, April 12 from
9 a.m. – 12 noon in the Regatta Room. Come
out and learn how to make different kinds of splices, including an eye
splice, in double braid and three strand lines. This
will be a hands-on session taught by West Marine riggers. No charge, but
pre-registrations are required. Space
will be limited to 15 participants. Signup
at the Club, or call (510-522-6868), or email (cwong@oaklandyachtclub.com). |
