HARBOR
VIEW: Mike Jackson, Vice
Commodore
Have you taken your boat out lately?
If not, how about joining this Spring’s Wednesday evening OYC races
with a BBQ afterwards? Need a good reason to use your power boat;
how about helping the Race Committee set and pick up race marks? You
don’t have to be an experienced racer; you just have to want to have
some fun. If you’ve never raced before, that’s OK. Come to the Club
around 5:30 and ask someone on the Race Committee for help finding a
skipper who needs crew that evening. Crewing is a good way for you
to find out that you really like racing sailboats. The races
start on the 9th of May. If you’d like to help the Race
Committee, please call Steve Shaffer at (510) 865-5726; he’s gonna
shoot me for giving you his phone number.
Your Harbor Committee and Board of
Directors have approved two new harbor policies. We think these
policies will help make better use of the space in our harbor and
make it easier you to navigate within the harbor.
The first new policy provides: 1) a
priority system for determining how boats will be moved intra-harbor
for the coming harbor reconfiguration; and 2) clearer information
about how slip assignments will be made in the future.
The second new policy establishes the
maximum boat length that may be assigned to a particular
length slip. With the addition of several large slips resulting from
our Reconfiguration Project, we will be able to assign boats to
slips of an appropriate length. No boat, which is now in the harbor,
will be forced to move because of this policy. Members may be given
a future opportunity to move their boat into a slip that is better
suited for their boat’s length.
If you have any questions on either of
these new harbor policies, please let me know. I’ll be happy to
discuss them with you, or send you an e-mail copy of the policies.

Around the Harbor
As you walk around our harbor, you’ll
notice these improvements: 1) a new aluminum gangway has been
installed for Pier Three; 2) the dumpster near Pier Two has been
removed and; 3) new non-skid has been applied to Pier 7 (if it wears
well the same material may be applied to the gangway on Pier 6 when
the weather permits). The gangways for Pier 1 & 2 will soon be
given some minor repairs and new paint. Be sure to say “Thanks” to
Brent.
Reconfiguration
Project
A contract has been signed to complete the detailed planning that is necessary to start construction. Construction will start shortly after the planning is approved by the Harbor Committee and the Board.
Stay Happy & Healthy. Thanks, Mike Jackson.

FROM
THE HOUSE: Carolyn Hooper, Rear Commodore
Spring is arriving, the blossoms are on
the trees and we have had some beautiful weather. What a perfect time to
come and mingle with your friends and new members and enjoy your
club.
Our new chef, Patrick, is cooking up some
fabulous meals and the bar is open. Sit out on the balcony and enjoy!
The ladies lunch was a hugh success. Carmen Konkle and Claudia Bass
cooked up a mean ceasar salad and a wonderful fattening dessert.
Our Commodore, Michael Hershey and Ron Konkle tended bar. Joyce Taylor entertained all by playing a wonderful banjo. The fashion show was great and one of our own, Patty Batchelder, was among the models and she not only looked fabulous but did a great job. There were lots of new people to meet but the best part of all was the raffle. There were great gifts donated by our club members and Maria Murray handled the narrative like a pro.We are very fortunate to have a great staff and wonderful members who all pitch in and make our club the great one it is. Let’s use the club more. Come to Friday and Saturday night dinners and Sunday breakfast. Also, mark your calendars for the wine dinner on April 21…..hope to see you there!

Bill
Niepoth, Education Chair
Plot a Course to the OYC Library
The Library? Well, yes. But, first let me talk a little about plotting courses in general. If you were one of the 25 or so people who participated in Marilee Shaffer’s computers-on-board class last month, you know about software that can help you navigate to just about anywhere. You also know about choosing the right programs and equipment, how to set them up, and how to use them. I was unable to attend the session (thanks to a respiratory infection) but I heard it was an excellent one . . . and, knowing Marilee, I am sure it was.
We have another program coming up this month that will let you know what kind of weather to expect on those cruises you plot. We announced it before, so this will be a reminder that Brooke Bingaman will present a session on marine weather on Saturday, April 14. It will be from 9 a.m. to noon, in the Regatta Room. Brooke is a General Forecaster with the National Weather Service, who speaks frequently to groups of boaters. Her experience includes work with Central Pacific Hurricane Center. Be sure to catch Brooke’s session.
So, what about the Library? It’s this. OYC member, Graham Norris recently donated some excellent materials that you should know about. Graham called our resident (actually, non-resident) Librarian to say that he had a full set of Passage Maker magazines, from issue number one in January 1996. He also has a large collection of Ocean Navigator. Graham and Marilyn (Marilyn Norris, that is) are cutting back somewhat on their boating activities and wanted to give the magazines to the OYC. Marilyn (the Librarian) was delighted to accept the volumes on behalf of the Club.
|
|
The beauty of the Passage Maker collection is that you can go on-line (www.passagemaker.com/) and check the tables of contents for the various months and years . . . and get a brief description of the articles in each issue. Once you have the home page up, click on “the magazine,” and then on “back issues.” Select a volume and click on “table of contents (complimentary).” The articles themselves are not available on line, but you can note the pages and go the actual magazine in our Library.
Later this month, Marilyn will get the collection shelved in such a way that you can access them easily. She will suggest that you borrow what you want to read and, then when you are finished with the volume, return it and re-shelve it so it will be available for other members.
As you probably know, the Ocean Navigator emphasizes celestial navigation. I enjoyed talking with Graham about his interest in the topic. While boating was part of it, his primary contact with the celestial navigation and sextants was as a United Airlines pilot back in the days when those techniques were part of the tool kit on transoceanic flights.
Thanks to Graham for the gifts to the OYC Library. And, thanks to all the other members who have donated volumes through the years . . . and continue to do so. There are some excellent resources in the stacks on various aspects of boating; dealing with heavy weather, getting ready for a cruise and taking off, being comfortable on board, maintenance, equipment, racing, etc. There also are some fascinating reports of cruises and races.
The collection also includes some non-boating, non-fiction volumes that you might like to peruse . . . depending on your other interests. We even have an occasional journal for cigar smokers. And, there are several shelves of general fiction titles. So, if you have not visited the Library recently, get smart and navigate on down there.

Social Report
April 2007
– Anne Jacobson &
Maria Murray
Celtic Fest was a great hit and a
sell-out, once again – thanks to all of you who supported the event. The
Scottish and Irish dancers and musicians presented excellent
entertainment for the evening. And our own Ed Jepsen was there
celebrating his 90th birthday with a strong family
contingent, including a brother-in-law who had turned 90 just a few days
ahead of Ed. So of course there were cakes and a rousing chorus of
“Happy Birthday” on the bagpipes!
Next up on the horizon is the Winemaker
Dinner on April 21st, which will showcase the wines of Clos
Pegase in Calistoga. Founder/owner Jan Schrem will be here to talk about
his wines and give us an entertaining and informative presentation
entitled “Bacchus the Rascal” as he discusses wine and art. Mr
Shrem is an avid art collector and art patron. At Clos Pegase you can
see sculpture by famous artists such as Henry Moore and others, as well
as antique sculptures and wine artifacts. Chef Patrick has prepared a
wonderful menu, pairing the wines with his cuisine. Price per person for
the evening of wine and food is $60. Reservations are being accepted
now.
In keeping with the wine and art theme, we
will be hosting an art show to complement the Winemaker Dinner, with
paintings by local Bay Area artists. Original paintings will be
available for purchase, for those who might be interested. The exhibit
itself will run for several days, so if you can’t make it to the wine
dinner, there will still be opportunities to see the beautiful
paintings.
May 19th will be our first ever
Flamenco Night. Please join us for a wonderful evening of Spanish food,
music and Flamenco dancing. More details next month.
In June, we lighten up for the summer,
starting with a dock party, the Fourth of July will feature our classic
pot-luck and watching fireworks.
Put us on your calendar, and join us for
all the parties in 2007. Events in
Red
below require reservations.

Baseball Cruise – Save the Date!
In this time of cool winter weather what
is better than to think of those warm days enjoying the green grass of a
baseball field and the sound of the ball when it makes contact with the
sweet spot on the bat. And of course you can’t forget that great smell
of garlic that tops the wonderful garlic fries, not to mention the
brats, beer, and whatever else you want including hotdogs!
Yep, it’s time to start thinking about the
OYC baseball cruise. This year the baseball cruise will be held June
8-10 when the Giants play their local rival the Oakland A’s. As in past
years we have purchased 40 game tickets for the Saturday afternoon game,
and we have also reserved 10 berths at South Beach Harbor.
We always announce this cruise early.
Remember, OYC can only reserve 10 berths and those will go to the first
10 boats to signup. We certainly welcome more participants than that,
but if you are a later signup in order to get a berth you will need to
personally call South Beach Harbor and ask to reserve one. South Beach
will take private reservations starting 60 days in advance of your day
of arrival – in this case starting on April 8th. I was advised by a
harbor official that if you call it is better that you not identify
yourself as part of the OYC cruise since your call could then get
misrouted – just say you are calling to book an individual berth.
The signup sheet will be put out at the
club on Friday, March 9. GO GIANTS!! (Sorry A’s fans...)
The Corinthian Cruise-out was FANTASTIC!! We all enjoyed beautiful weather, excellent meals, a good walk around the peninsula and great comraderie! We had 5 boats out of 12 signed up. We missed all of you that were not able to come and hope you will be able to make other Cruise-outs. They are loads of fun. Corinthian took great care of us and we have been welcomed back next year. Hope you make it then.

2007 Ladies Luncheon
The sun came out and the dining room was awash in
spring attire and hats. With a nod to St. Paddy’s day the tables were
decorated with green and white flowers. About 60 members and guests
enjoyed a jovial cocktail hour with music by member Joyce Taylor:
assisted by our trusty bartenders, Commodore Michael Hershey and Ron
Konkle. Carmen Konkle and Claudia Bass presented a delicious lunch of
Chicken Caesar Salad, rolls, cheesecake with chocolate sauce and
strawberries. Afterward the ladies were treated to a fashion show by
CABI Clothes (Carol Anderson by Invitation) with our helpful models
including members Liz Lizmer and Paddy Batchelder. They all looked
stunning. The attendees were not shy about trying on and purchasing the
jewelry presented by our friends at Patricia’s Treasures and our own
member Lynn Haggerty’s fine line of jewelry.
Thanks to our very capable raffle ticket sellers,
Maria Murray and Mary Holden we gave out many raffle prizes to the
delight of many. Congratulations to our grand prize winner, Monica
Duncan who won the $150 certificate to the Lafayette Park Hotels and
their properties. We wish you a wonderful and relaxing time.
Claudia and I would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped in
set-up, serving, modeling and clean-up duties. It takes a village to
make it all work and we are grateful for your assistance. Our sincere
thanks go to all who generously donated prizes for our raffle. Thanks to
your generosity the past few years, we were able to assist in the
re-decorating, painting and replacement the counter top and fixtures in
the women’s restroom this year. We will continue to put your support and
dollars to work to benefit us all.
Respectfully submitted, Carmen Konkle (more

Sail down to Catalina
Island
Hello cruisers
At the request on a number of boat
owners who would like to get a little offshore experience we are
putting together a cruise to Catalina Island this summer
Catalina Yachts is having its
25th annual gathering on July 13 & 14th at
Two Harbors and we have been invited to join them. Because of the very
busy summer season and availability of moorings it is best to arrive
by Wednesday July 11th to assure a mooring ball. That being
said, we can depart the gate on Sunday to arrive by midweek if we sail
directly. Those that want to depart earlier and stop at Monterey or
other ports along the way would be free to do so. This trip is not
limited to Catalina sailboats, all boaters are welcome to join us.
Should the weather not co-operate due to
sea conditions that are not satisfactory, we would perhaps stop at
Monterey for a shortened cruise.
You may elect to return from Catalina
via a short visit to a Southern California port. Transient berths are
generally available should your schedule or weather preclude you from
an immediate return trip home.
We are planning a meeting on May
5th at 6:30 in the Regatta Room at OYC. If you would like
to sail down with us or just learn more about our plans please feel
free to join us. Our goal is to provide an overnight sailing and
navigation experience.

Mark the days on your calendar now for our annual Delta Cruise. We will be working on the details, and promise updates in the near future. This year we will be cruising off the “hook.” We will not make marina reservations, however you may book dates at nearby marinas on your own. You will need a dinghy to participate successfully in the cruise. Likewise your anchor light should be operational, your propane tanks full and your water tanks topped off.
schedule: First rendezvous Sunday, Aug 12 at 1100 hrs at Decker Island for a gin fizz party. Over night at Decker Island on the hook. Monday, cruise Three-Mile Slough to Potato Slough, overnight on the hook. Tuesday move on to Three River Reach for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Friday members may go on to Georgiana Slough for more cruising enroute to Steamboat Slough or return to the Bay.
There will be activities to sharpen the mind and nonsense to make you smile. Nothing is mandatory except sunblock. Signup sheet will be available about June 1.

Rites of Spring Race Recap:
On March 17th the OYC Rites of Spring race enjoyed the biggest turnout in the race's 19 year history with 79 boats registered. The fact that warm weather and extremely light winds had prevailed all week, and were predicted to continue, gave the race committee some real worry. The possibility of drifter and need to reschedule were high in our thoughts the night before the race. Ah, but the wind gods, as always, came through for the Rites of Spring. In fact, they almost over compensated with 25 knots for part of the race.
OYC racers were well represented with 17 boats in the fray. Eight finished with trophies, led by John Tuma with a first. Considering the fact that all boats were double or single handed, many using spinnakers, all deserved trophies.
