Chagall worked with Romm in Vitebsk in 1917-19. This work dated from the period when Chagall was studying with Y. Pen in Vitebsk.

painting media and conservation. The painting for which this is the study is in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, Venice. It is signed and dated 1911.
