Some thoughts on money-folding
So why is it that dollar-folds are so disproportionately fascinating for many people? I suggest, in no particular order:
- Western-world obsession with money in all its forms
- the model has an indisputable minimum value
- surprise factor: unexpected material for origami / unexpected form of a dollar bill
- drives home origami rules: no cutting, pasting, or adorning
- dollar-folds are often (by nature) miniatures
For designers, these additional considerations apply:
- dollar paper is highly resilient
- proportions of 3-by-7 often useful (e.g. for animals)
- readily available
- challenging size and shape
- challenging material: difficult to see and reverse creases
- "busy" printed matter encourages models with sharp outlines
