Karen Briggs

Raised in Manhattan, NY, her natural talent on the violin began to evolve at the age of 12.  By 15, she was already performing professionally and beginning her career as a violinist.  "It took me 10 years of hard work to find out what I really wanted to do. And what I really wanted to do was jazz, church, and gospel music --- not classical."  Her career includes appearances in many TV/movie soundtracks as well as various other concerts (ranging from Carnegie Hall to Harlem's Apollo Theater) and TV shows.  She also had a cameo appearance in the 1999 motion picture Music Of The Heart.  Karen became a mother in 1996 and has released her own album entitled "Amazing Grace."  She has toured with Yanni since 1991: "After years of being together, he has a sense of what I'm trying to play...no one else offers outside talent such an opportunity. He writes the backdrop and we weave the cloth."
The Ethnicity tour of 2004 marked her last with Yanni.  She has since left.

Karen's Official Bio

Visually it is her raw, ethnic savvy and prowess that appeals to many who may have never appreciated the violin. Audibly, it is that fiery, soulful sound, accompanied by a plethora of influences that makes one pay attention. It is the combination of the two that sets her apart from all of her contemporaries. Overall, it’s not as much that she could be considered a prodigy. It’s that she delivers a message to men, women and children worldwide…an innovative approach to life itself has far reaching advantages. For this reason, it serves to note that in only a fraction of the time that it takes most violinists to reach a level of noticeable accomplishment, Ms. Briggs has managed to make herself recognized worldwide. Without ever attending the conservatory, this musical aberration has made many a violin player reassess the more traditional approach and presentation to the instrument.

Ms. Brlggs, has performed internationally as a featured soloist in concerts and venues ranging from Harlem's Apollo Theater to Carnegie Hall to the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. Her participation in a musical event has proven to elevate its mass appeal and overall success, as demonstrated by triple platinum video sales and an Oscar nomination.

Karen's natural ability to improvise in various styles of music has forced an evolution in the ranks of the symphonic orchestra, the Latin orquesta, the R & B. gospel, the straight-ahead jazz ensemble and even the rap act! Additional exposure to genres of Caribbean, Afro Latin, Pop and Middle Eastern musical idioms has allowed her to evolutionize her unmistakably identifiable style. Although one may say she is a jack of many trades in the genre of musical styles, she masters only her signature soulful style, which has earned the artist frequent solo opportunities in motion pictures, jingles, television theme songs, videos and other recordings. Karen has been called upon to perform with other artists such as Wynton MarsaIis, Dave Grusin, Stanley Clarke, Yanni and even the Wu Tang Clan! With current technological trends, don't be surprised if you were to hear the lush sounds of a string section being generated by this single musician.

Born in Manhattan, New York, to a family with a long-standing tradition of musical interest and cultural involvement, Karen Brigg’s natural acumen on the violin began to evolve with her first lessons at the "late" age of twelve. She chose orchestra class as an elective while in junior high school in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Today, flaunting a respectable versatility, and a show stealing stage presence, her appeal can easily compare to that of a seasoned vocalist. Her talent is acknowledged by her critics, colleagues, and fans of all ages. In fact, it was the famous orchestral conductor, Zubin Mehta, who once described her as simply "a natural".

With her experiences and talents as writer and arranger, as well as a spectacular performer, this virtuoso, with her soulfully animated style and influence, may perhaps compel many to distinguish the American violinist from all the rest. Be on the lookout for more fiery playing from her in the near future. And if not brace yourself for the next generation of violinists' popping up who have been influenced by this artist’s style.

Karen's solo begins at the 5:16 mark.
