After she graduated from college, Alfreda sang professional opera with the
London Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the North Carolina Symphony
Orchestras. Alfreda, who has both a classical and R&B background, had
been singing in the opera for the four years up until being hired by Yanni. She
believes that her voice is a gift from God, and uses it to emulate the sounds
of instruments.
The "Tribute" tour was Alfreda's first with Yanni. She applied
to a call he put out; he was looking for a vocalist who was a mixture of
"Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan." "Is that me?", she
thought. She really wanted the job so she did her homework by listening
to volumes of his music and reading everything she could find about him.
"I knew Yanni used 'opera' voices in some of his music, so I
put a classical piece, along with a jazz, an R&B and the gospel song
"Amazing Grace" on my submission tape. To my disbelief,
Yanni chose my tape and invited me to a live audition. I was scared
to death but, after a brutal 6 hour audition, I GOT THE JOB!! Ths
rest is history. The best thing about being with Yanni is that I get
to sing everything I know --- R&B, gospel, and opera."
When she's not singing for Yanni, Alfreda travels the world with her 15 piece band "Alfie's Playhouse", performing at corporate events, halftime shows, and house parties. She has released her debut CD "Soulstice", which is available on her website.
