A message from the Editor
This is my first edition. I'll put on my green eyeshade , sit on my stool and tell you my thoughts for future newsletters: I would like to make this the first thing you read when you bring in the mail. The newsletter should be attractive, informative, fun and timely. Now "attractive" and "timely" are easy, since it is currently a very professional, readable letter that comes on time. "Informative" and "fun" are harder, since your editor needs to know what you members want to read. For that I need your help. Good newsletters require a constant source of good, interesting material that will tell us things we need or want to know and, sometimes, bring a smile. For material, comments and critique, call me at 771-4558, send me stuff (Lochcrest Dr.) or Email me at Friedela@isoc.net. If you are not sure if your item is newsworthy, send it anyway. It is great to have choices.
Some potential subjects for future letters: 1. "How-to" tech talk. (I expect to ask our expert members to help with this). 2.Price Guides. (If you see an interesting one, send it to me). 3.Second and third generation news (I need lots of help here....Jim Kearse???) 4.Saleen Stuff (See page 5) 5.Build Sheets: What are they? How to decode? What can be learned from them? 6.Legislative news on the old car hobby 7. MCA news (Museum, elections, shows). 8. What other clubs are doing 9. Personals ( Example:"Mustanger seeking single female for friendship, more?.must love my '65 hardtop). 10.I plan to keep all the standard features: marketplace, new members, Calendar.

Mustangs on the Web
How many of you got a computer for Christmas? Or wanted one and didn't get it? Or wanted one, but thought they were too expensive? Or wanted one, but were afraid that learning to use would take too time? If any of those describe you, I have some thoughts . First, they are really quite inexpensive these days. Lots available under $1000. (Imac, including monitor for $1000,etc). Second, nowadays they are pretty friendly, not hard to get reasonably skilled.
One reason to want a computer (Maybe the best reason) is to surf the Web. That is FUN. If you want to get info about Mustangs, the Web is amazing. Here is a quick list of sites and what you can expect from them: MCA...www.mustang.org (club listings& sites, shows, pics, rules, judges) Museum...www.mustangmuseum.org (news, pics, long list of related sites) Ford Motor Co...www2.ford.org(big series of sites-new cars, history,Mustangs) Parts Vendors ...54 vendors have sites SAAC...www.saac.com(membership info, pics, list of Shelby sites.late models) Magazines...all major mags have sites. Registries...18 different; all kinds. Cars for Sale...Many sites; all kinds of cars, including Mustangs. Price Guides...All used cars; similar to Blue Book. Code cracker...Decoding all data plates |
President's Corner:
In days gone bye, the month of January always included New Years Resolutions as an attempt to inspire improved performance vs. the past. Seems to be still a good idea. Here are my personal list of resolutions (hope that many of you will buy-in, as well). I resolve to:
1. Be more proactive in club meetings, social events and the annual show. 2.Share my time and Mustang knowledge with all those who ask for my help. 3.Volunteer enthusiastically for at least one assignment for our annual show. 4. Solicit my friends and neighbors to find interesting speakers for our Program. Coordinator to contact. 5. Attend as many local Cruise-ins and local shows as possible where I can recruit new club members from among the Mustangers in attendance.
Maybe we can't accomplish all of the above during 1999, but achieving three or four would collectively move us up from a very good club to a great one.
Think about it and lets discuss in January.

The Saleen Allen RRR race team started the year well, parked the car, entered another series and won the championship. If that sounds confusing, it was especially so on the crew. The saga of '98 was the bickering between two sanctioning bodies which made a mess of sports car racing in the US. The Saleen CT 2 car was left with no sponsorship because the races had tentative dates, and without firm commitments to venues, the sponsors withdrew. Steve decided to pull out the World Challenge cars and run this SCCA series again. WC cars are a lot less costly to build and operate plus they had two previously tested chassis to update. Unfortunately, a number of the GT 2 crew were furloughed as they don't need as many to run the less modified WC cars.
As I mentioned previously, the GT 2 car was qualified for the Daytona 24 Hr but never ran a race lap due to a heavy crash in night practice. The car was withdrawn which brought us to Sebring where I reported a fine effort led to a second place finish in class and seventh overall in the 12 Hr race. That ended the GT season for the team until Laguna Seca in Oct. which I will mention below.
Steve acquired two of his Saleens which had been campaigned by Lou Gigliotti for two previous seasons. They had time to set up one car and Ron Johnson who had run with the Gigliotti team the year before got the ride. He finished second in the first race of the season. By the next race Terry Borcheller was hired and a second car was ready. Promise of things to come were seen as he qualified on the
pole his first time in the car alas, the car had a mechanical problem and didn't
finish the race at Lime Rock. Johnson again put in a solid effort with another second place finish. From this point, Terry went on a tear. It didn't seem to matter if the event were on a dedicated race circuit or a temporary street course, Terry won most of the poles. He was on the top spot on the podium, except for a few races where Cunningham (in an NSX) or Wiehle(one race in a Vette), kept Terry from winning. At one point he had won four straight. Johnson continued his steady finishes and consistent qualifying efforts. By the end of the year Terry had run away with the championship and Ron finished second in driver points. The competition had included NSXs, Vettes, Vipers Porsche 91ls, a Toyota Supra team and Kenny Brown's son, running a Mustang Cobra. Needless to say, the team locked up the manufacturers crown, as well. Not bad for a season that had soured quickly in the spring. Naturally I was a happy camper with the team dominating the series.
Oh yes, I mentioned Laguna Seca. The last CT race of the year was set for Oct at that famous Monterey CA track. This was an important race in that it was sanctioned under FIA international rules and many of the European teams were entered. Steve couldn't resist pulling out the CT 2 car for one last race. The car ran great in practice and qualifying in spite of some structural damage discovered two hours before the Saturday race. Frantic repairs were made and the car
started the two and a half hour race. Terry Borcheller carved his way through the field in a rain-slowed pace and managed to get up to second place. The next thing we heard on the radio was Terry saying he "was off' which translated to mean: he crashed hard. We were unable to make repairs in time to qualify for the Sunday endurance race, so our weekend was over. But what a great season and if Terry and Ron drive for the team in '99, we should be worth watching.
Stay tuned, Jim Reynolds
