Edward “Tony” Marburger

Edward Darris, “Tony”, Marburger, 91, of Fischer, TX passed away Thursday at McKenna Memorial Hospital in New Braunfels.

Tony was born May 17, 1916 in Coupland, TX, the second child of Edward and Clara Marburger. He graduated from Taylor High School in 1934 and attended business college in San Antonio. Soon after, he became a bookkeeper for First National Bank in Refugio, TX. In April of 1942, he wrote his own inscription papers to enlist in the US Army Air Corps and was medically discharged in July of 1943. While in the Air Corps, he came home to Coupland to marry Lucile Pfluger in May of 1943. In his words, she has “put up with him” ever since.

After his military service, Tony worked briefly for Humble Oil Co. in Houston and then spent 14 years as an operating engineer for Goodyear Rubber Co.. In 1950, he became an agent with State Farm Insurance and, with Lucile’s help, built his own successful agency. This was always more than a job for Tony, and he dedicated himself to faithfully serving his clients through life-long relationships. After his retirement in 1982, he and Lucile built their home and moved to Fischer, TX where he resided until his death.

Tony’s life was marked by outstanding volunteerism, friendship, and community service. Among his many involvements, he was a Life Member of the Canyon Lake Noon Lions Club and a member of the Canyon Lake Masonic Lodge. He drove children to Galveston’s burn center as a member of the Alzafar Shrine Hospital Corps. He also served with the Canyon Lake Action Center, the New Braunfels SOS Food Bank, the Texas Lions Children’s Camp, and the Fischer Store School Community Center. He was also a founder and life member of the Heritage Museum, a member of Eden Home Associates and Development Board, and a member of Faith United Church of Christ.

Tony was preceded in death by his older brother, Lonnie Marburger of Coupland. Tony is survived by: wife, Lucile, of Fischer; sister, Ora Nell Harkins of Hutto; son, Gary Marburger of Fredericksburg; son Alan Marburger and wife, Karen, of Austin; grandchildren, Sara Espinoza, and husband, Joey, Josh Marburger, Eric Marburger, and Kelly Marburger; great-grandchild, Risa Espinoza.

Tony was an example of Christ-like love, faithfulness, and humility for everyone who knew him. He will be missed beyond measure.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday, December 29th at 2 p.m. at Faith UCC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any of the above organizations.
