Melody Gilbert Nicholson Biography

Here's my bio such as it is. After grads I went to nursing school in Galveston but the following year my mother became very ill and needed to quit work. My father was working two jobs; I worried about him too. So it was my decision to quit school and get a job to help support my sister who were still young and in school. So I went to work for the telephone company. Later that year on Halloween I was raped.  I soon found out I was pregnant and had no idea what to do. I was a very naive person and couldn't believe it had happened I was in denial for some months. Then I was scared and didn't know how to tell my parents; finally my mother figured out what was what. I went to a home for unwed mothers and after my child was born had the heartache to sign papers giving up all right to her and allowed her to be adopted. I will never forget those hours and the pain I went through. Even though I was raped (I knew the father) that child was still part of me that I was forced to give away. I couldn't go home with her and I couldn't raise her because times and situations were not allowable for this to happen. So I picked up my boot straps and took it one day at a time and went back to work where I met a lady who invited me to a party and there lo and behold I met my future husband Howard. We dated for two years and we got married and shortly after we moved first to Atlanta from there we moved many places and many times and finally ended up in Kansas. We had three grown children; two sons and a daughter. Our daughter is the oldest and she is married and has one son, our only grandchild as of yet, she works for a landscape company and her husband works for a bank. Our sons have different ideas about work, Alan the oldest of the two works for a computer repair place and loves electronic and electric things has a natural ability to repair things that are electrical and electronic without going through manuals he has been know to bring back to life things others have said replace. Steve the younger works very hard for a company who bottles motor oil and other chemicals but is looking possibly for another job he loves his job but wants to advance and he hasn't had much chance to advance. But all in all they are very good kids. Howard is now semi-retired and works for a company here in Manhattan Kansas and seems to enjoy the work. I have been wheelchair bound now for about four years due to one bad leg and bad lungs. I smoked too many years and gave it up over twenty years ago but the damage was done. So now I am on oxygen 24-7 and I do fine but it limits me to a lot of things. I won't be able to come to the reunion mainly because  traveling is not an option for me right now and we are going to be celebrating 35 years of marriage that weekend. So I wish everyone happiness and joy and ask they write when they can. Melody Gilbert Nicholson
