Carol Mitchell Richards Biography

Please be patient. God isn't finished with me yet! Gee! I'm not ready to write my Bio. But I'll tell you where I've been and what I've been doing for the last 40 years.  After graduating from JHJ, I just hung out at home for the summer.  Trying to decide what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.  This made my dad very anxious. I can now understand why!  Being the mother of two boys

and the grandmother of 3 boys (2 , 1, and 3 mos.)  In August, a representative of Massey Business School was seated in our living room at my dad's request.  So, in September, I embarked on a career as an Executive Secretary, which was something at the age of about nine I knew I didn't want to do. I must say it has kept a roof over my head, etc, etc

In 1963, I got a job for a paper company typing billing on what I think was the first Selectric

Typewriter. It had the ribbon on the side and it kept falling off! I went to modeling school at night, but refused to move to New York when they suggested it. (Chicken-Little-here!). But it was fun and I did learn something.

My only claim to fame was through no effort of my own. My picture was on national television for years!  A candid shot was taken of me strolling down the sidewalk in front of Woolworth's downtown. They were doing a documentary about Houston. It was used every week in the opening of The Eyes of Texas and later on the Prudential show. I didn't get paid for it and do not have the slightest idea of where to get a copy.  However it was fun to see myself on TV every week.

On March 8,1968 I married a 1964 Jones Graduate. On March 5, 1970 came the birth of my first son. His birth brought an end to my airline career, which had begun in April of 1965. But, it was the best decision I've ever made in my life, because to me there is nothing more important than raising a child.  Brian, will be 32 in March, has a degree in physics, is a programmer, has two sons, Brandon 1 , and Ian 3 mos.

At the age of 25, I was the mother of 5-month -old baby and the youngest school crossing guard in the City of Houston.  I worked on Telephone Road of all places! I was finger printed, mug shot and given a number!  I told the policeman taking the picture, now I know how the criminals feel.  He laughed and said, yeah but their pictures were being taken for all the wrong reasons.

My 2nd son, Aaron was born on June 2, 1972. He is 29 and an assistant manager at CiCi's Pizza.  His son, Zachary is 2. I keep telling the kids they need to sign him up to be a kid's model while he is still little, make some quick bucks for his college and get out. He loves to have his picture taken and He's oh so cute! But unfortunately, they are just as chicken as I was!

Interesting note: Lynda Holbrook had a two-week old little girl and I had a week old little boy, when we both attended the 10 year reunion in 1972.  If I can squeeze into a girdle after just having a baby, there is no reason why all you folks can’t make it this year. No Excuses!

You are probably, by now understanding that my jobs have been too numerous and various to mention them all. I've worked for a major communications company, a large insurance company and lots of little companies. There have been jobs in day care centers, babysitting children in my home and as a teacher's aide. I've been a butcher, a baker, a candle stick maker (kidding).

Now, for the rest of the story.  From 1987 till 2000, I lived in the Dallas area due to the oil bust".

This was the 2nd worse decision I made in my life! A temporary move became permanent and my family still lives there. I miss them terribly!

After 29 years of struggling to keep the marriage together (8 years of it in counseling) I gave up the ghost and got a divorce.  It was one of those no one wants to be the first to say Goodbye kind of relationships. It ended on a relatively nice note and we can still speak to each other without getting mad.

Now, I have a significant other who has a degree, is kind, gentle, makes me laugh, takes care of me without suffocating me.  Never mind what I wear, how I look, he still tells me he loves me and that I'm beautiful.  The kicker is, he's 23 years my junior!  I don't have any money, so it must be love!

In June of 1999, my dad had lung surgery and it looked as if he would be having more health problems. He is showing signs of dementia and turned 81 last Sept. So in January of 2000, I gave up my job and moved back to Houston to be close to my parents.  I am an only child.

I've been working temp, currently, taking a correspondence course in writing children's books.

Last July I became a licensed real estate agent. So, if you are planning a move, I'd love to help you.

Oh, yes! I have managed to get some college credits on a part time basis.  In those very few courses, I got all 4.0s!  So, I'm giving some thought to going back and getting a degree.  However, singing is my love and some time between now and never, I must find a way to

do something with what is still a pretty good voice.  (Golden Voices 1959 - 1962)

I went missing from the reunions between the 10 year and the 30th. But, I'm having a great time getting to know all the committee members, most of whom I didn't know well in school. So not being in the in-Crowd" is not an excuse for anyone.  We've all gotten either a little blind, deaf, fatter, skinnier, bald or gray (Thank you, Ms. Clairol); unless of course you are able to afford a face lift and personal trainer. So don't think that lets you off the hook. You won't recognize anyone, except by their nametags, unless you are local and have the opportunity to see each other

regularly.  So looking different than you did in high school is no reason to not come! For Pete sake, after seeing us, you'll probably be glad you did!

All my adulthood, I've felt that I haven't done much with my life. I know there are others of our class who may feel the same.  I no longer feel that way.  I have a poem some where, that says, if you make one person smile or laugh, if you have made some one’s life a little better, if you have ever planted a flower, a tree or made some one happy, then you are a success I'm sure, I've done all these things more than once in my life.  So, even though, I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, I am a success. So are you!

So, get on your Hover Around, put your specs on and your hearing aide in or whatever it takes and be there or be square.  We are all looking forward to seeing everyone!  Please send in your Bio and the reunion in April! Besides, God isn't finished with us yet!
