Mike Green has been Pipe Major of the City of Washington since 1991. His first teachers were Charlie and Paula Glendinning and he grew up playing under them in the now-defunct Lindsay Pipe Band (feeder band to Denny & Dunipace) before moving up to the Grade 2 band in 1978. Mike has played with Denny & Dunipace, Scottish & Irish Imports, and the City of Washington every season since then, with the exceptions of 1984, 1985, 1988, and 1990 when he was living in Japan. While in Japan, he helped the Tokyo Piping Society form a Grade III competition band, which won prizes in Hong Kong and Jakarta and took 2nd place in the Santa Rosa Games in 1990. Mike has had instruction over the years from Donald Lindsay, Jimmy Macintosh, John Mcaskill, and John Macfadyen. Mike is currently Senior Advisor and Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, and an Associate Professor of International Relations at Georgetown University. From 2001-2005 he worked on the National Security Council of the White House as Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and Senior Director for Asia. Mike lives in Bethesda, Maryland. He was born in DC in 1961 and went to B-CC High School, Kenyon College, Tokyo University, and Johns Hopkins University. His wife, Eileen Pennington, is native of Yorktown, Virginia and works at the Asia Foundation in Washington.
