Credit Card and the universe

True story...

Her Royal Highness, The Wife, was happy.  She had just received her pretty new Visa card from the mail.  Keep in mind that personal credit control is very tight in Singapore, which makes credit cards coverted status symbols for most people.

It took a few seconds for that excited smile to disappear.  The pretty credit card has some light scratches!  She wants to go down and get it changed.  What do I think, she asked.

I told her, "Dear, do you know how HUGE the universe is?  The nearest star to ours is many light years away.  If we travel at the speed of light, it'll be years and years before we reach another star.  Our galaxy is 100,000 light years in diameter, containing millions and millions of stars.  If we travel at the speed of light trying to touch each star, we will not be able to do it for millions and millions of years.  And that's just for one single galaxy!  The nearest galaxy to ours is millions of light years away.  If we travel at light speed from the edge of our galaxy to another galaxy, we can travel for millions and millions of years, probably enough time for dinosaurs to die off and humans to be evolved from apes, and all we'll see is space. Nothing but space!  And that's just the distance between 2 galaxies. There are probably millions of these galaxies in the universe. The universe is unimaginably HUGE!

"And back here on earth, one woman is concerned about scratches on her credit card."

She laughed.  The plan to change the credit card was cancelled.
