What kinds of businesses are good for HBBs?

I'm pretty subjective here, because I have experience with only one type of home-based business. Your mileage will vary.

In my opinion, the best business for a home-based business is something that you understand in depth, something that other folks are interested in and want to buy, and something that you can sell with pride.

My home-based business is Internet consulting for several career fields. Because I am extremely experienced in web site design that works (ie, very visible in search engines), I feel most comfortable in teaching others, writing books and how-to guides, and giving seminars. I know how to locate my target audience, and my products (The Internet Recruiting Edge, for example) are rated top in the industry. In other words, I present a valuable resource for my customers.

Is there a field or topic about which you feel you're the best? Can you turn that into a viable marketing plan?

Direct marketing of wholesale goods, I understand, are quite popular on the Internet. Alas, having never tried such a home-based business, I can't comment on them. However, you might find some good information at the following places:
