All About Home Based Businesses -
How do I do one?

How do I do a home-based business?

With great care.

Wasn't that simple?

Following are the steps I took when creating my home based business. Your mileage will vary.

1.) Plan and research your product.

What is it you want to sell? Are there any competitors? How would you obtain the product? Why would people want to buy it? How would you fulfill orders? Do you have a good business plan in place?

One excellent way to research your product is to go to your friendly neighborhood search engines and search on it. For example, let's say that you have an insane desire to sell golf clubs (one of the prevelant spam emails going around). You would search on

    +golf +clubs +for +sale

and see who is currently selling what for how much and why.

2.) Design your marketing.

Ever hear that to be successful, all you need to do is place tiny classified ads in the newspapers and watch the money come rolling in? Ever realize that each tiny ad costs a wee bit more than your average lunch? Ever multiply that sum by the number of ads you would need to place?

Be smart about your marketing. Don't try to sell recruiting books to engineers or skin products to football players. The Internet has many, many places related to your products where you can find your audience - you have to actively search them out, become a trustworthy source for information, and generate happy customer testimonials. Don't take the short-cut of mass mailing - that is the quickest way to ruin your reputation.

3.) Create a web site and promote on the Internet

After you know what your home-based business will target, it's time to think about how to get it in front of people who would buy your product. A critical component of this includes designing or buying a comprehensive web site that showcases your offerings in an enticing style.

4.) Become a credit card merchant.

Being able to accept credit cards is very important when selling products anywhere (especially on the Internet). Many customers want instant gratification after they've decided to buy.

Be certain to research the ins and outs of credit card processing.
