The Baltimore County Genealogical Society, Inc. has a vast resource pool from which to draw the best speakers on genealogy topics.

Following is our planned program:

January 27, 2008 Research Day Everyone is invited to fully utilize all of the research assets of our Library from 12:00 Noon until 4:00 PM. We currently have more than 2,500 volumes including Family Histories, Genealogies, volumes on Baltimore City, Baltimore and the other counties of Maryland, plus numerous other states and foreign countries. Also, the Vertical File collection of bible records, family group sheets, tax lists, land & cemetery records, plus our Microfilm and CD collections.
February 24, 2008 German Research in Maryland Church Records Gary B. Ruppert, MD Charlotte's Birthday
An overview and introduction to German-American research in Baltimore City, with a focus primarily on a19th-century time frame and on church record research.

Gary Ruppert is a native Baltimorean. His family settled here about 200 years ago. He has been on their trail since 1971. During that time he has learned a lot of facts and curiosities about the German-American community in 19th-century Baltimore City. He is author of a number of papers published in the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin as well as the 1995 winner of the NGS Family History Writing Contest. His association with MdGenSoc began in 1972. He became webmaster of that organization in 2001, vice president in 2003, president in 2005 and was recently named the editor of the soon to be revised Maryland Genealogical Society Journal, formerly the Bulletin. He has been associated with Mercy Medical Center since 1980 where he is chair of the Department of Rheumatology.

The York County Historical Trust has excellent resources for genealogy especially for South-Central, Southeast Pennsylvania and northern Maryland.  The YCHT holdings also include significant Maryland information and unique resources.

MOBTOWN AND THE NINETEENTH CENTURY GANGS OF BALTIMORE

Martin Ford, Ph.D

Mobtown- News accounts would suggest that violence and mayhem have reached unprecedented levels in today’s urban America. But 1850s Baltimore was a dangerous place. In this colorful lecture, Martin Ford introduces the Plug Uglies and Blood Tubs, nativist gangs that engaged in urban warfare with Irish and German immigrants, and terrorized Mobtown.

Associate Director at the Maryland Office for New Americans and former Executive Director of the Maryland Ethnic Heritage Commission. He has taught at Bowie State University and Towson University and was a Fulbright scholar in Liberia. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. in Cultural Anthropology from SUNY-Binghamton, an M.A. in International Studies from Ohio University, and a B.A. in English Literature from Rutgers University. Maryland and Thomas Cresap in The French & Indian War

A review of Maryland’s performance in the French & Indian War and one it’s most intriguing character’s, Thomas Cresap.

 Allan Powell is Professor Emeritus of Hagerstown Community College where he taught Philosophy and Sociology. He has a Master's degree from Ball State University, and served as a Navy gunner and patrol bomber in World War II (1942-1945). During Professor Powell's more than forty years' teaching experience, he received five awards for Excellence in Education and authored a number of books such as "Maryland and The French and Indian War," "From Seminary to Skepticism," and "Forgotten Heroes of The Maryland Frontier." He has recently served as a member of the Washington County Ethics Commission and is a contributing columnist for the Hagerstown Sunday Herald.
