Dash Pad Dilemma Revisited

Dash-Topper or Cover, names for thin, molded plastic cover; slips over wounded dash.

Advantages
* Relatively inexpensive!
* Can be installed over existing dash!
* Can look pretty decent.
* Price is cover's best feature.
Disadvantages
* Is not padded.
* Rupture of dash creates volcano-sized wound.
* This must be sanded flat for rigid topper/cover to fit.
* Reflects light like hard plastic.
* Some people find dash reflects onto windshield.
* Most artificial looking of dash solutions.
* Not nearly as easy to install attractively as unit's basic simplicity suggests.

Padded Rubberized Urethane dash cover.
Uses metal mounting bolts to hold pad to dash.

Advantages
* Completely replaces old pad, retains padded or cushion effect (a safety feature).
* Will not crack thru speaker holes.
* Can look within 85% to 90% of OEM dash.
* Fits between windshield pillar posts correctly.
* The only line of dashes with matching "knee-pads".
Disadvantages
* Original radio speaker becomes inoperative because dash prevents cracking at speaker holes by making holes only appear to be complete.
* Metal mounting studs are large, often misplaced, cannot be adjusted, or easily removed.
* Most find installation requires removing one or more studs, and gluing that portion of pad to metal of dash.
* Dash comes from the shipping box with ugly excess on edges.
* Top side of pad is smooth and controlled, but bottom side is ugly, and looks like raw meat.
* Ultra-violet light may dry out and crumble surface texture faster that other dash compounds.
* Only supply '68-'69 and '71-'74 dashed. '58-'67 and '70 owners must use the manufacturer's '68-'69 dash pad.
* If you must choose a dash pad, this pad is still the only one we can give a lukewarm recommendation.

Padded Rubberized Urethane dash pad. Uses nylon Christmas Tree mounting studs.

Advantages
* Best/most stock looking pad straight from shipping box (within 92-95% of OEM dash).
* Completely replaces old pad.
* Will not crack thru speaker holes.
* Original speaker will work as dash speaker holes are completely punched thru.
* Nylon mounting studs are slightly adjustable to line up with dash holes and can be removed, or reinstalled without damaging pads.
* Can be installed quickly. (Removal of repro pad cumbersome.)
* Only dash with a complete line of pad (i.e., '58-'67 and 1970). However, this manufacturer does not have a matching knee-pad.
Disadvantages
* Pad does not fit!
* Pad shrinks during the curing process, so it may be 1/2 to 3/4 inch short of meeting each windshield pillar post.
* Shrinkage effects one or more mounting studs, so installation is difficult.
* Best to remove one or more studs, then glue that portion to metal of dash!
* "Pulling" pad into place with stock screws at door frame tears pad.
* Many people get the dash installed with glue, but it not "right".
* Several large suppliers once carried this dash, but have dropped it.
* Recent improvements have cut down shrinkage.
* Current pads are improved over dashes marketed before 6/90, but they still are not right.
