Description for this 64 Vert

Type: Cabiolet

Extcolor: Black on yellow

Intcolor: Gray / Black

Current Purchase: June 1981

Modes: 1982: New paint and top, new (rebuilt) 1600 engine, new tires replaced starter, generator, carpeting. Previous owner put in newer VW seats with high backs.

Items on the 'wish list' include

  1. Upgrade to a 12V system. No need to explain this one.
  2. New distributor
  3. Replace exhaust system. Any suggestions on good header muffler combos? I'd like to keep a fairly stock look but get a better purr & power.
  4. New tires / wheels. The skinny stock rims are VERY slick
  5. New rubber/gaskets all around.
  6. Find original/replacement back seat - the current one is a carpeted plywood deck of my own design.

What Makes This Ghia Special

I used to ride by this Ghia every day on the way to high school in western Kentucky. It was sitting in a neighbor's yard with a for sale sign in the window.Five years later, I was home from college for the summer and the car was still in the same place. I was desperate for wheels (the family station wagon only got about 12mpg and was very uncool). I went to the neighbor. He wanted $2000 for the car. I offered $1800 and the car was mine. I immediately replaced the tires (dry rot) and I had a great first car. I had to put a quart of oil in every time I filled up the tank, so as soon as I saved some more $ I had a rebuilt engine put in. I bought "The Idiot's Guide..." manual and was instantly transformed into a shadetree mechanic. I took the car to Pennsylvania after college where I inherited a '73 beetle to use as a winter car while the Ghia stayed in the garage. By the 2nd winter the Bug had terminal metal termites and I found myself a '83 GTI. For a short time I was one happy camper with my Ghia Cabriolet for the summer and my GTI for my more seroius driving cravings. Alas all good things must come to an end. I took a job in New York City and put the Ghia in my folks garage in PA. The GTI survived about two more years untill it was totaled by a hit & run driver while parked along the curb. The Ghia has only been out a few times a year for the past ten years and has about 84K on the clock (~ 6K on the rebuilt engine). I plan on moving soon and am looking forward to getting my Ghia back in my own garage again where I can start on my never ending wish list of things to do.

Misc. Info

This car has been, above all else, FUN. Simple to work on, even for a beginner like me. And it always gets attention wherever I go.
