Flexible Work Arrangements

Employees need flexible options more than ever:

• In 1995, 60% of married couples were dual-career couples, up from 44% in 1967.

• In 1996, 62% of all mothers with children under the age of 6 were in the labor force, up from

39% in 1975

• In 1996, 19% of the labor force worked part-time. Of those part-time workers, 18.5% (4.4

million people) were managers and professionals.

More employers are offering flexibility:

According to a 1996 Hewitt Associates study of 1,050 major U.S. employers, 718 (68%) of

them offered alternative work arrangements in 1996, up from 60% in 1993.

Catalyst’s Flexibility Facts:

• 27 (39%) of 70 companies surveyed had 100 or more employees using flexible work

arrangements; over 60% of surveyed companies had formal policies or guidelines for at least

some type of flexible work arrangement.

• Flexible work arrangements help organizations retain experienced and valuable employees.

Nearly 60% of women interviewed would have left their jobs without the opportunity to work

flexibly.

• More than half (53%) of the 45 women Catalyst interviewed were promoted while working

flexibly.
