Inaugural Day, 2009
Barack, we greet you, on this,
the inaugural day of your presidency!
May your high hopes for your country
and administration be realized!
May we regain our moral authority,
so foolishly squandered in that
go-it-alone-cowboy war in Iraq.
May we rejoin the community of nations,
not as a bully,
but as a partner ,
aware of our own foibles and limitations,
so that a hundred years from now,
when China or Brazil’s the superpower,
they will pause for a second, thinking back,
“Maybe we should be like the United States in the time of Obama,
treating everyone fairly – Lord knows they never had to --,
never abusing their power….”
O Barack, putting on the weighty mantle of the Presidency,
May God bless you with all wisdom and strength!
